how much do you rely on carbon-producing transportation?

Challenge 3- For one full day (from the time you wake up until you go back to sleep), free yourself completely from carbon-producing transportation, such as cars, motorcycles, and elevators. For this challenge you may not carpool with anyone. Comment on your experience walking, biking, skating, etc., all day without the use of fossil fuels.

  1. This challenge was not too hard; thankfully I don't drive a lot anyway so I did not have to give up much! It was a little hard in the morning because I wanted to go get something to eat but I could not drive so I had to make something at home. Thankfully I don’t have any elevators in my house so I could easily avoid using them.
At around 11am my friends wanted to hangout so we had to figure out how to do that, so they drove to my house! Whenever they got to my house we decided to go to the elementary school to play basketball, so we all got on our skateboards and rode there. It was hard to not carpool either cause my friends wanted to go back to their house but since I could not they were very nice and decided to stay at my house so I was not alone! I think I could live without using carbon-producing transportation; I would just have to stay in a place where everything is in walking distance.

  2. Well yesterday I went all day with out using any carbon producing transportation whatsoever. So I rode my bike to school in the morning which wasn't so bad I live right down the street. Then at lunch I had to go to physical therapy that was a looong bike ride to old Coppell. Then I had to ride back. After that I was at home for a while, until at 5 I rode my bike to Andy Brown to play volleyball. So my experience with this was that as long as I dont have to leave Coppell its fairly easy, but any where further would suuuuck.

  3. In the beginning of this challenge I found it to be pretty simple because I didn't go anywhere of distance. It got much harder though when my friend called me up to hang out. I didn't have a bike and it was at least a mile to his house. I told him my situation so he decided he would drive over to my house. I thought it kind of defeated the purpose if instead he just used the gas. So we decided to meet half way at the park. Although he made it to the park much faster (he was on a bike)I ran there and we played basketball and threw the frisbee. Getting there wasn't really an issue but running home was a little worse. It was pretty difficult mainly because things aren't super close and covenient sometimes.

  4. Yesterday, May 25th, I chose to not use any carbon producing transportation for a day. Going into it, I knew it was going to be a tough challenge but I thought I was up to it.
To start my Saturday I woke up, ate breakfast and then road my bike down to Andy Brown West to play some volleyball with some of my friends. After a while of that I road home because I had two Grad Parties I had to attend. Luckily for me one was near by so I could walk but the other was a bit further so I took my bike to that one. After the last party I road my bike home and was extremely tired. It had been a long day of being outside and I was simply exhausted. While I am happy I saved gas, for the long distances that I had to bike, it was almost not worth it. This experience however has opened my eyes to biking to places that are not very far away. It also makes me realize how much I use my car and if I could cut down on short trips then I could save a substantial amount of gas. I was very glad I picked this activity because overall it was fun!

  5. On Sunday I went a full day without any transportation. It was a really boring day, but it was also pretty relaxing. I was told many times by different family members to go get something from the store, but I told them no every time. When they asked why, I said it was for school so I got away with it. That was probably the good part of the day since I didn't have to run any errands. The bad part was when my friends wanted to hang out and I couldn't go in any cars. So my friends just came over and they brought me food which was nice and we just kind of hung out at my house all day and swam. At night I was hungry and didn't have anyone to get me food, and I had no food at my house. So I got on my bike like I used to and went and got subway. I went to sleep fairly early because I had a sand volleyball tournament the next day. Overall it was a relaxing, boring day, that I don't think I could do again. I know for sure if it was any other day of the week, I wouldn't have been able to do it. This experiment did remind me of when I was little and walked everywhere, and after this, I plan on driving as little as possible. I drive too much, and it gets irritating.

  6. I completed this challenge on Friday. It was pretty easy for the most part, because I live very close to the high school so I was able to walk there and back in about 10 minutes. After school, I went to the YMCA to work out with some of my friends and that was about a 10 minute bike ride there, which was pretty easy, however the bike ride back to my house was a bit more of a challenge since I had just worked out and I was already tired. I just hung out at my house with some of my friends for the rest of the night, so they had to come to me which meant that I only would have driven 2 places the entire day, so it wasn't really a big deal to walk and ride my bike instead of driving. It seems like it is pretty doable to just ride a bike in or walk in Coppell because everything is pretty close together, and it doesn't usually take more than 15 or 20 minutes to get somewhere if I am riding my bike. I think the only time I really need to drive during the week is when I go to my soccer practices which are in Plano, and I could probably car pool to those if I had to. I could and probably should walk to school every morning since it is less than a mile and it only takes me a couple of minutes extra to get to school if I walk.

  7. This was a very hard challenge to complete. I did this challenge on Sunday May 26th. I didn't have very much to do that day. The one time that I did have to go out though, was when I had to go to Kroger for my mom. I decided that the best way for me to get there without using a car would be to ride a bike. I don't live too far away from Kroger, but its still far enough to take about 25 minutes to get there. I didn't have to get very much, just a few bags of stuff. I brought a backpack with me to make sure that I could carry what I needed without having to use my hands. Then I peddled home. This challenge was in my opinion one of the more entertaining challenges. Just because you get to go out and ride your bike wherever you needed to go.

  8. Going into the day (Monday), i was actually relatively excited to take on this challenge. The idea of riding my bike around Coppell was appealing. However, after riding my bike to my friend's house and later to go work out, it became clear to me that transporting myself without using fossil fuels was a task that required more effort than I originally anticipated. By the time the mid-afternoon came, I decided that I'd rather not leave the house anymore, out of sheer laziness to ride my bike or walk anywhere else. Indeed, I successfully abided by the rules of the challenge, but I am somewhat disappointed to say that I was not able to go about living the same lifestyle that I would have lived with the use of cars and transportation.

  9. Well, when I first thought of no transportation for a day I thought I wouldn't leave the house. Oh but let me tell you, Coleman and I road our scooters for a solid 2
Hours on Thursday. We also road our bikes to and from school ok Thursday. It felt great that I took one less vehicle off the road. It might not make a difference but if multiple people end up doing this,
It will save this beautiful earth of ours that we take for granet. I started to also car pool this whole weekend. At the end of the day on Thursday I realized it was a lot easier than I thought.

  10. I chose to complete this challenge on memorial day because I didn't have work today. On almost every day of the week I have to use some form of transportation to get to school or to get to work. Today I decided that I would stay home all day and not use any because I didn't have to. It wasn't very difficult until it got closer to the end of the day. I became very restless and wanted to go somewhere. I finally caved and rode my bike to CVS. It took a lot longer and it was a hassle, but in the end I felt good about not using transportation for an entire day.

  11. On Sunday May 26, 2013 I attepemted this challenge it really wasn't as hard as i thought it would be. I was at my lakehouse with all of my family and i never had to even leave the house, but i did miss out on going on the boat. That was ok though because i just hung out with my cousin and went fishing ended up catching around ten fish. All in all this assignment was pretty cool just to see if i could do it but the chances of me not riding in a car or not getting in a elevator are around slim to none.

  12. Monday, Memorial day, I decided to go for this challenge. At first, it seemed like it wouldn't be too bad. I didn't have too many errands to run, and I didn't see a need to drive anywhere. My church had a Memorial Day Picnic at the local park. I rode my bike there, which took around 10 minutes. Afterwards, a friend of mine asked if I wanted to go hang out at his place. I agreed, then told him I would bike there. Little did I remember, he lived on top on a very large hill. I ended up just walking with my bike up the hill, but none the less, I biked or walked everywhere. It felt good to get exercise and to know that you're not impacting the planet at all while doing so. I'm bringing a bike to college, so I'll be able to continue this endeavor.

  13. For one full day I did not rely on carbon based transportation and let me tell you.. It was definitely an experience. I woke up and made myself breakfast, this is Saturday just in case you needed to know. Then it wasn’t bad because I had to do yard work from like 10:30 until like 5 pm and it kinda sucked but what was funny was I told myself i wasn’t going to drive anywhere that day and when i was done with yard work there was a bunch of leaves and trash in the bed of my truck from the work that needed to be carried up to my parents office so it could get thrown away. But I had to tell my dad “Uhhhh so pops is it okay if we wait until tomorrow to take it? because I can’t drive today” and he got kind of mad but it’s okay because he got over it. Also my mom was cooking dinner that night and needed cheese from the store and so i had to walk and get it instead of using my car like I would normally do. Also my friends were going out that night and wanted me to come but I literally had to tell them that they either had to drive themselves to my house and stay here or I couldn’t go out with them.. Needless to say I was watching movies with my parents that night by myself. I did however get a lot of pictures sent to me about how much fun they were having because they are such amazing people. Anyways it was a solid day of not driving and I felt good about myself and for the environment.

  14. For my challenge I decided to go without carbon transportation for an entire day. I picked Saturday for this. Saturday is a day that I typically stay at home and relax during the day. When night comes around I typically want to go hang out with my friends. One of my friends was having a grad party that day, but since I couldn't drive to it I had to ride my bike. Luckily he lives in my neighborhood so it wasn't a far ride. After the grad party all my friends wanted to leave and go do something else. Sadly I couldn't go with them if they went in a car. My friends being such good friends went in their cars anyway. I just had to ride my bike where they were going. This was a far bike ride because my friends were going across town. After we got their my parents told me to come home. So now I had to ride my bike back to my house after being at my friends house for like ten minutes. Once back at my house the challenge was complete and I had made it a whole day without carbon producing vehicles. This was a difficult challenge for me because I rely on cars so much. I had no idea it would be that hard to go without cars. Luckily for me I only had to do it for a day. ;)

  15. For my challenge I chose not to use any carbon transportation. Since it was a fairly nice day on Sunday, my friend Megan Kennedy and I decided it was the perfect day to fulfill our challenge. I started the day by roller blading to Megan's house. We hung out at her house for a while, and then decided to just blade for fun. We bladed five miles around Coppell, which started to make my legs really sore. Then we got hungry, so we roller bladed to Jersey Mikes and had a late lunch. After we bladed back to her house where I needed to take a break because I was a bit full from lunch and very dehydrated. (That's what I get for not working out more) Once I felt better Megan and I roller bladed to a friend's house and walked her dogs. (Which was nice because we were still on roller blades so the dogs dragged us and I didn't have to do any work. Finally we bladed back to Megan's and I eventually bladed home. I have a giant blister on my left foot that is very painful and my legs are extremely sore, but over all it was actually kind of fun. I don't think I could do it every day because the weather probably wouldn't work with me every day, but it's definitely a small alternative that I could use to get around Coppell.

  16. I chose not to use carbon transportation for a day. Yesterday was the day I was going to attempt this, and I did just that, attempted it. Unfortunately someone called me to make plans and although I did not drive myself I did carpool. I and many others rely on carbon transportation everyday in Coppell. In big cities this may be different but in Coppell, the only time I see bikers is when they are exercising. Yesterday I went to the lake and did not drive but did ride with a friend and then was picked up by friends. I thought maybe I could do it but the reality of it was was that we and I just rely way too much on cars to get us around.

  17. I chose to do the no carbon-using transportation challenge on Sunday. I thought that this would be the easiest challenge out of them and I was surprised on the changes I had to make. It was a lot harder than I had thought. I planned to spend all day Sunday at home catching up on Arrested Development before the new season released so my challenge would be incredibly easy. But as usual, nothing goes according to plan. I started out the day well, sleeping late and watching a few hours of Arrested. But then, some of my friends asked me if I wanted to hangout. They wanted to go see Star Trek and there was no way I could make it to the theater without carpooling or using my car. I had to say no and I continued my lonely existence as a couch potato. Later in the day even Arrested was beginning to get boring. Luckily I had a friend, Clay, whose house is pretty close that I could walk to. Overall my challenge was harder than I anticipated, I didn't realize how much we depended on transportation.

  18. Last Sunday I chose not to use any carbon transportation for my challenge. Jordan Jones and I decided this was a good day to conquer the challenge of roller blading anywhere we wanted to go instead of using our cars. It wasn't too hot outside and there was a nice breeze! Jordan started off the day by blading over to my house (we live pretty close to one another.) Once she got to my house we watched the season finale of The Vampire Diaries. Once it was over we decided that we should go on an adventure and blade around Coppell. Our adventure turned out to be five miles! It was such a great day to blade because at times we were going against the wind and other times the wind was behind us and we got to have a break. Shortly after arriving at my house we decided that we were starving so Jordan suggested we should eat at Jersey Mikes. I can never turn down Jersey Mikes so of course I agreed. I got the chicken caesar wrap and she got the club sub (it was delicious.) We bladed back to my house and we both agreed that we needed to relax and drink a lot of water because we were tired from blading so much. Our friend Courtney Keyes called us and told us to blade over to her house so we could walk her dogs..so we made our way over to her house. The thing is we didn't actually walk with the dogs they pulled us while we were on our roller blades. It was funny because we almost fell a bunch of different times! Once we went on the "walk" with Courtney's dogs my mom called me and said it was time for dinner. So Jordan and I bladed back to my house and came home to a bunch of yummy food that my she prepared. When Jordan took her blades off she discovered that she had a massive blister on the inside of her foot..I don't think I could roller blade everywhere I went in Coppell because it take a while to get to your desired destinations, but I could occasionally roller blade to my friends houses that live close to me. We had a successful day of completing the challenge and I'm glad we did it because we had a lot of fun and got good exercises in.

  19. I chose to ride my bike for one day. It was kind of hard because i was late to work because i didn't plan my time wisely. Although i was late it made me feel good about myself just knowing that I reduced the amount of fossil fuels. It did take longer to get to places but I think if you work with what you have you shouldn't have any problems.I'm really glad I chose this challenge out of the four because I will deffinitly be riding my bike more places like to the gym or my friends house. The wheather is usually nice in the summer so that shouldn't be an issue.

  20. On Sunday I chose to go without modern transportation; my reasoning behind this was to challenge myself to make a change in my daily routine. Without work and it being a weekend, I didn't have much use for the car so that made this challenge fairly easy. My day consisted of waking up around noon, helping my parents out with some yard work, then watching some Arrested Development. Dinner wasn't a problem on Sunday as my brother came home from a late night of work with food for me. My parents usually do their own thing on the weekend nights because Matt and I are working at LCCC late into the night. So, overall I was able to complete the challenge with relative ease and toning down on my transportation use will be a viable option in the future

  21. For the past couple of weeks I've been using my bike as my source of transportation and I have to say I LOVE it! Riding my bike for me is not only saving myself from driving and emitting gases but it's also a huge stress reliever. I've been riding my bike to school and throughout the day I pretty much stay in Coppell which makes it a lot easier because it's not like I'm having to bike anywhere crazy! But so far I have enjoyed it and I plan on riding my bike to school the rest of the year unless there's rain or any weather conditions that don't allow me too!

  22. For my challenge i chose to ride my bike every where I went. It was a little tiring but it was real fun. It made me feel good about myself knowing Im not harming the enviornment. Plus its really healthy for you. i can definetly see myself riding my bike more places in the future or even just for fun. This challenge was definetly the best out of the 4 and I really enjoyed it!

  23. I chose to go transportationless on a weekend day, eliminating my need for transportation to school. It was easier than I expected, partly because the weather was borderline heaven so using an alternate transportation method was actually more enjoyable than driving. It was also easier than expected because I work at the closest store to my house, Papa Johns. I can literally see it from my roof. I will probably longboard and bike around like this come summer, its fun.

  24. On Friday I decided I was not going to use any modern transportation for one whole day. We base our everyday life's of these fossil fuel based objects, but we never face the realization that they may not always be here to our disposal. So for the first time since I basically received my license, I decided not to drive my car. I can't speak for everyone, but this wasn't too difficult. I live right in the center of Coppell so walking places only takes a couple mins. When I woke up I ran to the Ymca instead of driving which only took 5 minutes. After that I walked to smoothie factory, and ran back home. Since I didn't have my car I decided I would take it easy at home and spend some time with my family instead of meeting up with my friends at Wab since I wasn't allowed to use motor transportation. Honestly this was a great experience, and I feel as though I could fair well without motor transportation. We all base our life's of these vehicles, but it was a good feeling not using them and helping our planet for a day.

  25. I chose to do this challenge not because it was the easiest but because I wanted to see how much I depended on my car. My day started off early as I decided to walk to church considering it's on the other side of Sandy Lake in relation to my house. I didn't plan accordingly and ended up walking in late despite how close it is. After the service, I walked back home and had to turn down the offer to go out to eat with my parents. Instead, I made myself a late breakfast. One of the reasons why I liked this challenge was that it limited the chances of me going out to eat and eating unhealthy. Instead of driving around and listening to music and running errands, I decided to set up on the patio and enjoy the afternoon outside listening to music. The evening was very enjoyable as we invited family over and cooked dinner. Overall, I feel as though I tried too hard to limit myself instead of decrease the amount of dependency I had on my car to get me places.

  26. I chose to write my blog post discussion on this challemge because it seemed like the easiest one and I wanted to see if I could actually go a day with out carbon-producing transportation. I knew that if I wanted to be able to travel some what of a long distance I would have to get a hold of a bike. I walked over to my neighbors house friday morning and asked if I could use one of their million bikes they have to ride to school for a school project. Being the friendly neighbors they are, they lended me their bike and i was off on my nearly 1 mile long journey to school. it honestly wasnt that bad, I departed from my house at 8:30 in the morning to make sure i had plenty of time to get to school, and i arrived with time to spare. After school I then rode my neighbors bike back to their house and gave it to him as i had already invited all my friends to come over to my house so i didn't have to drive and no one would have to drive me

  27. I decided to choose this challenge to see if I could actually complete daily tasks without the use of modern day transportation. Of course initially i was very skeptical about the whole idea of not using transportation for a day and being able to get what i needed done. So to start my Saturday off, i usually take my dog to the dog park to run and play. Today instead of driving i walked to the dog park and i was surprised at how short the walk actually was and enjoyable it was to also be able to take time and look at the nature surrounding me. Afterwards i went back home, stayed home for a few hours cleaning and later decided to also get my family in on the eco- friendly fun and we walked to the nearby yogurt shop. All in all I realized that i can do all the same things i normally do and enjoy it more at the same time being very eco-friendly.

  28. I chose this challenge, because I have been doing this for about good 5 years before high school. I walked/biked to my house during my youth year before high school. I guess it wasn't as pleasant, but I didn't really have a choice back then with my parents always working. But ever since I received a car, I do agree I have gotten lazier burning gas and fuel. So Today (Tuesday) I have brought out my lonely bike and once again geared up for a non automotive vehicle day. I rode my bike to the school and to my house back. It was very fun actually I was able to enjoy the clear natural environment of my neighborhood. Bird plus wild rabbits were visible that I haven't noticed in a while. I did enjoy that day with no automotive.
