In an additional paragraph, discuss how an anthopogenic, enhanced greenhouse effect due to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation could relate to severe weather events, specifically Hurricane Sandy, which is affecting millions of people on our Eastern shores today.
(Note: If you feel that these weather events are not related to human activity, then state why and be specific.) No matter your claims, be sure to include research to back up what you say.

It really put it in perspective for me when they said that if earth’s existence were condensed into a calendar year, 365 days, mankind only would have been here for 45 minutes. Our race in such a small amount of time has managed to significantly increase the global temperature, ripped a hole in the ozone layer, and increased the methane levels in our atmosphere by 150%. It’s even more amazing to me that with how statistically improbable it is for a planet like earth to be able to sustain human life, people still don’t seem to care. So many people don’t even understand what’s going on in the world around them. So many people are concerned with their own affairs, their own petty little problems. So many people fight and bicker and go to war without even the slightest bit of concern for the well-being of the planet that supports us. Not just this video, but being in this class, even if it’s only been ten weeks, has affected my views on climate change, and all other things affecting the earth. It’s quite sad to me actually, that people talk about how our generation, with the advances in medical technology, could live to potentially the year 2120 and beyond, yet so little people know that the earth may no longer be able to support human life by as early as 2050. I wish more action would be taken.
ReplyDeleteWarm air and warm waters are the driving forces behind the rain and winds of hurricanes. Due to the increase in greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, global air and water temperatures continue to rise without showing signs of going down. If this trend continues, we could potentially be experiencing hurricanes several times a year, if not more.

I found it profound how we can let the buildings around us interact with nature to benefit us without causing any harm to nature. There was an example in the film about using the earths heat to heat buildings. If we could figure out a way to make that work then our use of energy from fossil fuels would drop tremendously. Another way we could reduce non-renewable energy consumption, is to have solar panels on buildings, and car roofs. I have known that what we are doing now is not good for the planet but I had no idea how easy it is to make small changes to fix. Now that I know how we are causing these problems and how easy some of the solutions are, I will be trying harder to do my part.
ReplyDeleteBecause we are releasing greenhouse gasses in to the atmosphere, the earth is slowly starting to warm. This change in temperature, is speeding up the way heat cycles around the earth, causing weird wind patterns which changes weather patterns. If we can slow pollution and the release of these gasses, then we could help keep most of this devastation from happening.

The most profound idea hat outstunned me was the human activity of consuming products. This was another evidence of our presence of affecting the Earth; in fact, in fact, it may be to me the greatest anthropogenic cause of the global defects. My views weren't changed much by watching the film, but I did learn a valuable information of the causes.
ReplyDeleteI have found of cases where we also create more events of natural disasters. For hurricanes, we heat the Earth so much that the sea surface temperature has warmed more rapidly than over the years it would naturally be warmed. You may have learned that in different altitudes, the temperature is colder than warmer; this is tied also with hurricanes. The oscillations of a cyclone is able to advance its formation more faster since the water it carries is raised in temerature. The cold air is in a fray with the warm air, which continues the oscillation of the cyclone.

When I was watching this documentary, I was learning many things and hearing experts talk about and expand on the same things we had learned in class prior to watching the video. The most profound idea I took away from the documentary was the whole concept of global climate change. Of course, we learned already that the Earth's climate changes and the normal causes of it, but hearing the experts talk about it has changed how I view it; I never previously took in to account the outside factors that could possibly effect the Earth's overall climate until watching the documentary.
ReplyDeleteDue to the enhanced greenhouse effect and deforestation, we have and will see more violent weather effects and storms. As Hurricane Sandy hits the East coast, it will strike violently and wash away countless buildings, cars, and people. Since more and more trees are being torn down to make room for shops and homes, that greatly reduces the amount of sturdy objects in the way of Hurricane Sandy; there are also no trees to absorb the water, which would reduce the amount of water and the severity of the aftermath. Because the enhancement of greenhouse has been making the climate warmer, this means that water will evaporate faster, causing droughts and irregular climate patterns around the globe. Where a large mass of fertile soil and good farming land once was could become completely dry and uninhabitable (if no modern technology or means of transportation are available).

What was the most profound idea you took away from the documentary, The 11th Hour? Were your views on climate change affected by being exposed to the film?
ReplyDeleteThe most profound idea that i took away from the documentary was the massive population growth and the fact that we could reach our limit to sustain life pretty soon. my views on climate change were changed and
i realized that there was a very thin layer over the Arctic ozone layer. they have changed because i now know the vast impact humans have on this earth and its ability to sustain life. the enhanced greenhouse event traps more hot air or hotter temperatures in our ozone. another is when the air increases the rate at which the icebergs melt and create floods and creates the forces and winds needed to create hurricanes and also tornados. Also the deforestation puts more of the gas the trees need to support their life into the environment which we don't need and then produce less gas used by humans and other species in the environment today.

Watching the 11th hour, I was able to realize the dire situations earth is in. If humans do not make an effort to change our ways, the human race, along with many other animals, could be put in a very serious situation. This situation could include hunger, a lack of water, and ultimately extinction. This film especially opened my eyes in regar to how fast our world is changing. To think that our population has been on such a cray increase as revealed in the graphs in the film, is crazy and is something that should get the attention of all humans. I hope this film can be spread more across society, because it seemed to be very insightful and opened my eyes to the situation earth is in.
ReplyDeleteThe greehouse effect has a surprising large impact on the weather patterns, specifically rain, across the world. With an increase in these gases and an increase of deforestation, rainforest are not able to keep up with the immense amount of carbon being released into the atmosphere. Since rainforest are somewhat responsible for cleaning the air, the air quality has become much worse with the increase in deforestation. Rain forests affect the rain patterns across the world as well, because they absorb and utilize so much water, and as the deforestation continues the rainforest cannot absorb the same amount of water. Therefore, the water is forced into the atmosphere creating violent storms, such as Hurricane Sandy.

The most profound thought i gathered from this documentary is that we are the only species in the biosphere to have a concept of the future and be aware of how we affect it. That being said, we are the only species to have the capability of changing the future so it becomes better for our Earth. I've always thought climate change was occurring, but had no idea how fast it was or how to change it. The 11th hour brought up some good possibilities for changes to help our exponentially declining environment.
ReplyDeleteHurricane Sandy and other hurricanes are formed when oceans are warm and areas of low pressure. This is why hurricanes usually occur in tropical regions, not Alaska. Global warming could be causing more hurricanes as an increased greenhouse effect could be heating up the ocean and atmosphere, creating the perfect conditions for a hurricane to form. If the greenhouse effect does create more heat in the ocean, then we can expect more hurricanes that are category 4 & 5.

The most profound thing that I saw from the video was that the Earth is being harmed by the humans on this planet. More specifically how global warming is causing damage to the planet, and to all species on the planet. I was surprised when DiCaprio pretty much said, "if we do not do something about global warming than we will end up in grave danger." This video just reinstated to me that humans as part of global community have to act on this issue. I've seen plenty of news on the extreme climate change, but this video made it clear that something has to be done. Unlike other videos, this documentary had so many scientist explaining the important issue facing us. So my views really didn't change, but more just got strengthened that we must do something, and do it fast.
ReplyDeleteOver the last 60 years humans have been adding way to much greenhouse gas to our atmosphere. There has always been greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. The job of these gases is to trap in the suns rays and allow the earth to sustain life. However, over the last 60 years humans have been adding on too the amount of greenhouse gases in the earth, and thus making the earth slowly rise in average temperature. The addition in greenhouse gases is caused by emissions from cars and deforestation. Hurricane Sandy is a great example to show how global warming is causing extreme weather events. The ice caps are slowly melting which is adding more water to our oceans. With more water the storms can get bigger and bigger. Tom Zeller a writer for the Huffington post writes about hurricane Sandy, "As it is, the science suggests that human-driven global warming is creating an environment capable of amplifying the energy of certain storms, by providing warmer ocean temperatures, say, or moister air, and other ingredients that hurricanes need to thrive." Hurricanes are most common in the summer months. However since the earth is slowly becoming warmer, we will begin to see more severe weather in the fall and spring. We have an issue that must be solved. Humans need to come together as a world and figure out a way to cease greenhouse gases and global warming as a whole. If we don't we will continue to see devastating weather, such as Sandy.

From the documentary the 11th hour an idea that really stuck with me is that not that the human population made this big footprint, but that humanity can lower it if they try to do so. I thought that all of these scientists were telling us to lower our effect just so it wouldn’t grow any bigger; I didn’t really think that they meant that we humans could actually bring down the amount of greenhouse gases that we had already distributed into the atmosphere. My views of climate change were changed slightly, but not my entire view was changed. I knew that the climate change was one factor that was making all of these huge storms happen, but I did not know that we could stop them by doing such small actions like planting more trees, using trains and buses, owning less cars and even by bigger actions like having environmental friendly cities, houses, cars, using solar power, etc.
ReplyDeleteOne way that the greenhouse effect relates to big storms is by the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere that is given off as humanity continues to burn fossil fuels. The more that is burned, the more CO2 gasses that are given off, and more CO2 in the Earth’s atmosphere causes more heat to be absorbed by the Earth, so the temperatures rise. So when the temperatures rise, the frozen blocks of ice in the world’s oceans begin to melt, which cause the sea levels to rise and cities near the coast like Washington DC to be attacked by storms, like Hurricane Sandy has done recently with New York City and many other cities in the Northeast. Deforestation is also another contributor to the huge mass of CO2 gasses given off because trees are made up of fifty percent carbon and when they are cut down, that carbon goes back into the atmosphere, and every year millions and millions of trees are cut down, again causing those storms like the burning of fossil fuels does so.

The most profound thing in the documentary was how the forests are depleting very quickly and how they cannot be rebuilt because once the nutrients from the soil are used up it just turns into a valley. Yes, my views on Earth's climate have changed because I learned that "In total, average global temperatures have increased by about 0.8°C (1.5°F) since 1880." Also 70 percent of the sun's energy shining on us is used and absorbed; the other 30 percent of the energy is reflected back into space. I think that global warming and green house gas emissions exist, but are not caused by human activity. Therefore, I don't believe enhanced greenhouse gas emissions could lead to natural disasters, such as Hurricane Sandy; it is just another natural cycle on Earth.
ReplyDeleteI just can’t believe that we the people have treated our planet so poorly that has resulted in a very serious matter of global warming. Before this film I myself was sort of in denial about global warming, partially because I didn’t understand but mostly because I’m scared. After watching the 11th Hour I feel like I have a better understanding as to why things happen on Earth the way that they do because of mother nature with the human species acting as a catalyst. I want to act on making a difference, I feel as if some people don’t know truly how bad things are and what they can become.
ReplyDeleteDue to the temperature rise, increase in greenhouse gas emissions, and deforestation I think that it very much could relate to severe weather events, specifically to Hurricane Sandy because not only do I believe in global warming but also because an article that I read states that “climate change very likely made Sandy’s impacts worse than they otherwise would have been”(Huff Post). The article says that there are three different ways that “climate change might have influenced Sandy: through the effects of sea level rise, through abnormally warm sea surface temperatures, and possibly through an unusual weather pattern that some scientists think bore the fingerprint of rapidly disappearing Arctic sea ice” (Huff Post). Carbon pollution is the main reason our planet is getting hotter, “increasing the chances of weather disasters, drought and flood and hurting our health”(Celsius). Within these past 6 months it has been the hottest our planet has ever been and has resulted in several wildfires, hurricanes, and other natural disasters (Celsius). This is an obvious a sign that our planet is not balanced and that people need to be aware of their doings to cause such a dangerous shift and find a way to decrease our dependency on fossil fuels. “The increase in Emissions of carbon dioxide solidified a trend of ever-rising emissions that scientists fear will make it difficult, if not impossible, to forestall severe climate change in coming decades”(The New York Times). The emissions increased “5.9 percent in 2010, according to the Global Carbon Project, an international collaboration of scientists” and “global emissions of carbon dioxide jumped by the largest amount on record in 2010”(The New York Times).

ReplyDeleteIn this documentary, The 11th Hour, one thing that really sticks out to me is the human element. The part that says this generation has an amazing opportunity to change the world in a big way if we work together. This caught my attention, because so many times it seems like people focus on the negative. Although the movie seemed like all bad news at the beginning it turned out to be somewhat positive. It let us know the problem and the seriousness of the situation but told us that there was hope. We just have to start acting now, all together. My views were not really changed however, I guess I have just more views to consider while thinking about climate change.
With more people using more energy today at a faster pace, there are bound to be problems. For instance, people are still using a ton of oil to get around instead of alternate, cleaner energy sources. With research I found that too many greenhouse gases are being emitted too quickly. This is causing ice to melt and sea levels to rise. This in turns makes hurricanes become stronger and build up faster. This change might have even helped cause Hurricane Sandy, a hurricane that has affected many people’s way of life and the economy as well.
"Scientists Unsure if Climate Change Is to Blame for Hurricane Sandy - NYTimes.com." The New York Times - Breaking News, World News & Multimedia. N.p., n.d. Web. 4 Nov. 2012. .
After watching the 11th Hour, the most profound idea I took away was that our energy sources will eventually run out and if we continue on the rate we are going at, it will be quicker than we know. My views were not changed because I had heard all of the claims before.
ReplyDeleteThe science behind the correlation with the green house gases and the intensity of storms such as Sandy is irrefutable. "According to a new simulation study by a group of scientists at NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL), a 5-12% increase in wind speeds for the strongest hurricanes (typhoons) in the northwest tropical Pacific is projected if tropical sea surfaces warm by a little over 2°C." The data is conclusive that the increase in temperature has had a devastating affect on the strength of storms.
"Global Warming and Hurricanes." NOAA's Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research. Web. 4 Nov. 2012. .
What shocked me the most was the fact that first-world countries like China and South Korea would like to be like the US. To think like if they were us, they would use 30% of the world energy, as Louis C.K describes New Yorkers who just got electricity after Hurricane Sandy, "I had like five hair dryers on going like, wooh!" For how much energy we waste there is a reason why there is thinning of the Earth's ozone is thinned out around Antarctica.
ReplyDeleteI do not think that the increase in greehouse gas emissions and deforestation has caused the severe whether from Hurricane Sandy and Katrina. Huffington Post has an article talking about how some of the levees were breached. Lets not also forget about Katrina and when the levees broke in New Orleans hitting the lower 3rd. It was not the fact that it was something that was put in the atmosphere, but it was because of faulty mechanism on our own engineers that built the levees which caused for more destructions and deaths than expected.

As I watched The 11th Hour, the idea that became most influential to me was the fact that we can make such a big impact in such little ways. I have always know that global energy is limited and that we would eventually have to find a new sustainable source of clean energy, but I never understood how serious the problem was. Not only are we wastefully using resources, but we are polluting our own earth at the same time. I was also already aware about the idea of global warming going into the film, so there were no surprises for me in the film, instead just information and facts to help backup my basic understanding.
ReplyDeleteAn enhanced greenhouse effect as well as increased deforestation will lead to global warming. Deforestation means that there will be less oxygen and more CO2 in the air. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) traps heat from sunlight in the atmosphere in what is called the greenhouse effect. As more harmful gases are emitted into the air by way of pollution, they will eat away at the ozone layers and allow more sunlight and heat to enter the atmosphere and be trapped. All of these effects together lead to global warming. Such warming will melt polar ice caps and evaporate more water that will be able to be condensed in the air. This increase in atmospheric water will change rainfall patterns and lead to increases in sea levels as well. Tropical storms typically form over warmer waters, so coastal areas like New York and North Carolina will be even more susceptible to freak storms like Hurricane Sandy.

The most profound idea that I took away from “The 11th Hour” was the rate at which our climate is changing. I knew about everything that was mentioned in the documentary, however; I was unaware of the speed of which it is all happening. My views on climate change were unaltered as they basically aligned with the views expressed in the documentary.
ReplyDeleteWhen we destroy the natural plant life that filters the CO2 that is harmful to us, Oxygen production is reduced causing a faster climb in CO2 rather than in O2. When the greenhouse effect is enhanced with higher levels of CO2, more photons of energy are trapped in the form of heat within the Earth’s atmosphere. This causes a rise in atmospheric and surface temperatures on the Earth. The reason more violent hurricanes are becoming more frequent is because the increase in atmospheric temperature has caused an increase in ocean temperature. This, therefore; generates a higher contrast of temperature between the surface and stratosphere causing greater amount of heat lift to be generated and greater falling rate of cold air to be generated. This produces more violent thunderstorms and overall a more violent hurricane as hurricanes draw their energy from ocean water temperature’s. So the higher the ocean temperature, the higher the probability is of a “superstorm.” With higher atmospheric temperatures, cold fronts like the one that Sandy impacted also produce greater contrasts in temperature. So we had Sandy which drew its energy directly from the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean, and we had a cold front which is basically a point of contrast between higher and lower temperatures, colliding causing an even greater contrast in temperature therefore generating much stronger and more severe storms. Higher elevations experienced blizzard like conditions from this. If the CO2 levels were not as high as they currently are, there would have been a much less catastrophic outcome from Hurricane Sandy.

The most profound idea I got from this documentary was that our race is actually leading to the death of our planet. It is obvious that our human effects are harming our planet, but it is a shocking thing to hear that we will eventually end all life on our planet. Our pollution, emissions of greenhouse gases, and deforestation are causing this eventual death. My views are still nearly the same as they were before the film. I just know a lot more about our climate and the severity of this issue.
ReplyDeleteAnthropogenic is the idea that humans have a made a large negative impact on biophysical environments, biodiversity, and just the earth’s environment in general. Our race has caused a lot of pollution and green house gases that have harmed our earth. Deforestation has also made a negative effect on our planet and is becoming more and more severe. These activities have affected our weather greatly due to such things as the alteration of our Nitrogen cycle. Our climate is also changing because of human interference, and has done things such as increase the heat of our planet and possibly causes storms like hurricanes ands tsunamis. The most prominent effect of this issue is our emissions of green house gases that have gradually began to break down our ozone, allowing more heat to reach earth. It is evident that our actions are altering our climate and are leading to disastrous storms like hurricane Sandy, occurring today.

I think that the fact that the human race is so young compared to the Universe. On a Cosmic Calender, the Human Race entered existence at 11:59 on December 31st. Dinosaurs didn't even come into existence until Christmas Day. The fact that the universe is so old is all in all mindboggling.

I thought the coolest idea that i took away from this documentary was probably the idea that they talked about alot, "The key to our survival is our mind", it goes to show that alot of things we do today we dont think about and i think once people start thinking before they do something then our community, environment, and world will be safer and we wouldnt have to worry about our survival as much. I was very suprise about ho wmuch of an impact the climate has on us. They said it is one of the biggest problems we face today, throughout the documentary they stated that since we have started to see some of the hightest temartures ever, earth may start to become like venus, which in that case there would be no human life on our planet.
ReplyDeleteGreenhouse gases cause increasing climate and increases the overall temperature whihc then makes the water evaporate faster. Climate in diffferent areas will change and or be affected which then woul dcause a variation in drought patters due to the everchanging heat and temperatures. When the ocean is constantly going through a cooling and warming pattern it starts to contribute to atmospheric changes and changing rainfall patterns. This could cause bad weather such as el nino, or as we have recently seen, hurricane sandy. As the weather starts to change you will see warmer winters in colder areas and colder winters in warmer areas. If we were to reduce the amount of the use of fuel and deforestation, then we would see a strong drop in greenhouse gases.

The most profound idea I thought was probably when it was talking about global warming and how it is a major concern for our future. It said that the earth warmed up by seven tenths in a year which is an extreme amount. Our earth may possibly become like our sister planet Venus, which we all know that if it did happen no one could survive because of the extreme temperatures. My views on climate change after watching the movie have changed drastically. After the movie saying how climate change is one of the biggest problems and talking about the temperature and how our earth has warmed up, really makes me realize how our world needs to change. My solution is we must clean our environment and we need to start now!
ReplyDeleteI believe that the weather events are related to human activity because in the video it talked about how deforestation is hurting the world and when you cut one tree down another tress doesn’t just grow back up it says it then turns to a dry spot. Due to the rising temperatures of our planet I think that is a major cause of all the hurricanes that have been occurring. We have so much technology we need to use it to help build systems that would help our world. We need a cleaner environment, so if we change some buildings to where they rely on the suns energy for the building to enable it to work then we should do it because if we followed through on it then it would increase the amount of jobs, help our world and our environment.

The most profound idea that I took away from the documentary is how easily we could shift into our sister planet Venus. I probably wouldn't like living in that hot of a planet and with sulfuric acid rain. My views on the other hand were not really affected because I already knew that we were destroying the earth and needed to stop.
ReplyDeleteOur effect on the atmosphere by deforestation and increasing the green house gases, has a huge effect on weather patterns. Weather is directly affected by temperatures. Hurricanes for example generate all their power from the heat circulating in the ocean. As temperatures increase hurricanes become much more powerful like Hurricane Sandy because normally cooler waters would decrease the power but with out them the hurricanes can run rampant and flood millions of peoples homes.
The most profound idea that i took away from this documentary was the idea that people have such a huge role in all the enhanced greenhouse effect, my view towards climate today will be changed because of this film.
ReplyDeleteAnthopogenic is the idea that environmental pollution and pollutants originate from human activity. Hurricane Sandy is a prime example of how anthopology relates to severe weather because the storm wandered north along the U.S. coast where ocean water is still warm this time of year and when a cold Jet Stream made a sharp dip southward from Canada down into the eastern U.S. helped cause hurricane sandy which proves that anthopology is an effect on severe weather events today.
http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/2012/10/30/did-climate-change-cause-hurricane-sandy/
The biggest thing I took from the 11th Hour is that our planet could turn unlivable and look like our sister planet Venus. My views weren’t really changed because I think global warming is real and comes from us. We as humans are emitting so much green house gas that the Ozone layer is starting to go away which is terrible for climate change and could have us having summer one day and winter the next, fossil fuels need to be illuminated and clean energy needs to be used to keep our home safe.
ReplyDeleteWhen we cut down all these forests and have massive deforestation it causes the climate to change dramatically. It releases co2, which is a green house gas and adds to the affect of global warming.
The most profound idea I took away from the video was when they talked about the effects of all the fish we take out of the ocean. I had no idea that so much of the fish doesn't even get used and I was also surprised that the fish put certain chemicals like mercury into the ocean that the ocean needs.
ReplyDeleteIt relates to severe weather events because what happens to one sphere of the Earth affects every other sphere. So the loss of animals and trees during deforestation actually affects different levels of gases in the air which can alter the ability to evaporate water and changes the overall temperatures and erosion on rocks. It continues to go on to every part of the earth. With rising temperatures because of Global Warming, the change in temperature has messed up the levels and made severe weather like Hurricane Sandy happen.

The most profound idea put forward in the documentary is that our world could be completely uninhabitable within our lifetime. It is truly mind blowing to think that a world that has been habitable for thousands of years could be completely ruined in one hundred years. My views mostly aligned with what the documentary said, but it is always good to learn more information over a topic that is as serious as this.
ReplyDeleteWith the world warming, the ocean is warming as well. This causes stronger and stronger currents and makes cooler water (that would normally slow down the hurricane that far north) warmer. The bigger hurricanes make these disasters far worse than they would have been before.

The most profound idea that I took away from the documentary was the realization of how delicate of a world we live in. It is so incredibly easy for us to ruin everything we have with our negligence and unknowing of our own doings to our ozone, our forests and to the warming of our planet. We can change the way we do things such as the cars we drive and how we power our houses. If we switched the way we fueled our cars we could lower the emissions by 90%. After watching the movie it has made me want to change the ways we do things. It makes me want to go out and show people that we are slowly destroying our planet with our inability to change the way we treat our planet. There should be away to make everyone change the cars they drive to solar powered or hydro powered to reduce the green house gases being released. It would be hard to do this because the car won't look as cool or go as fast as some people want the car to be.
ReplyDeleteThe most profound idea that I took away from this documentary was the idea that the Earth could one day be a planet very similar to Venus if we lose our O-zone layer. My vies on climate change were affected because I never knew how servere the consiquences of global warming and deforestation could really be. If we do not stop what were are doing now, we could eventually end up like Venus.
ReplyDeleteThe most profound idea i got from this documentary is that the ozone layer is depleting. It is that way because of us. If we are affecting the ozone layer it also means that we can help it and we can do something about this to stop it. Antarctica has a hole, not completely gone, but very thin layer of ozone left above it. The film made it more real to me that this is actually happening right now. I have learned about the ozone layer before, as everyone else has, but this documentary made it more insightful.
ReplyDeleteI do not believe that we are affecting the climate. I believe this because in a graph we have seen it shows us that the weather fluctuates on its own. I think that the weather changes on its own over the time that has passes from the last time it fluctuated.

I think that the 11th hour was a great video. It really showed us that we can affect our environment, but it also showed me how we as humans tend to say that we are not with nature that we are separate from it. I think that’s true to some point some people are really connected with nature but others are not as connected. My views on climate change to in fact change because I used to think that it wasn’t that big of a deal but now that I’ve seen how it really is and affects us I think it’s a bigger deal now that we have more people in the world than ever.
ReplyDeleteI think human impact on the world if it doesn’t actually cause natural disasters, I’m sure that it effects it in some way, sometimes it could be good and sometimes it could be worse. I think by putting all these gases that we are putting in the atmosphere, it can affect our clouds in ways where hurricanes and tornadoes can be even bigger and more deadly.
Greenhouse Gases Affect Weather Patterns - http://www.iol.co.za/scitech/technology/greenhouse-gases-affect-weather-patterns-1.103113#.UJfShYacYUM
The most profound idea that I took away from the documentary is the fact that by us cutting down trees for our own needs, also known as deforestation, is causing earth's temperature to rise. It never even crossed my mind that by cutting down tree's that it could and would affect our earth this dramatically. But I now understand that our earth has just the right amount of greenhouse gases to make the earth suitable to live on. When you throw deforestation in the mix it changes things completely simply because trees convert CO2 in the air to oxygen through the process of photosynthesis which is what we need. Now if we're cutting down trees it causes more carbon dioxide in the air because there's no trees to convert it. Because of this more of the sun's radiation is being reflected back to earth rather than space which causes our temperature on Earth as we know it to rise. This video didn't necessarily change my climate views but let me become more acknowledgeable about what is going on and how we as humans can change our actions to save our earth.
ReplyDeleteNow relating how human activity relates to severe weather events is a very interesting topic. Mainly because I don't necessarily think that global warming, deforestation, etc. are the main cause for these weather events such as Hurricane Sandy. But I do believe that as the earth's temperature is rising, as well as the ocean's temperature and the warmer the water the more intense the hurricane is. So do I believe that human activity is the sole role for hurricanes? No, but I do believe that human activity can affect the intensity of the storm.

The most profound idea I thought was how human kind has been affecting our atmosphere and the environment around us. If we don't do anything to change it we could have a serious problem on our hands soon, within the next 10 to 20 years to come.
ReplyDeleteEven though our Earth is going through a warmer period right now, we are still adding to the greenhouse gasses with our pollution and waste everywhere. The Earth will regenerate, but our human race won't if we don't stop adding to the problem. Take a look at our atmosphere, it's deteriating a rapid rate and will continue to do so if don't stop all these bad toxins and chemicals like methane into the air.
From the documentary, The 11th Hour, the main idea that I took away was how fragile and valuable our world is. My views on our climate change were affected after viewing this film because it opened my eyes to how we, humans, are the main reasoning to the climate change. The majority of the climate change is caused by us and our actions, such as deforestation causing excess gases to be released into our atmosphere. This documentary showed me that we need to treat our world better before we end up completely destroying it.
ReplyDeleteAll of the things we do today in our world, effects the way that the earth treats us back. Everything we do from deforestation to the greenhouse gas emissions, makes our world react in different ways. The things we do causes the weather to act differently, hurricane
Sandy has been affecting the entire east coast and this all started from the things us people do. We have been contributing to the rising temperatures and these warmer temperatures help hurricanes reach their full potential, everything hurricane Sandy has done has mostly started from the things we do here everyday.

It's insane to think that us a human race has almost killed our own planet. Its hard to believe a world that will put aside things like war, religion and culture to be one in the fight against ourselves.
ReplyDeleteWhile some people believe that global warming is BS i believe its true and we need to act on it now! We see evidence of natural disasters but continue to ignore the underlying problem. The 11th hour really captures the hearts of disbelievers and brings them to the light. Global Warming is real and at large and we need to act on it now.
http://www.nwf.org/Global-Warming/What-is-Global-Warming/Global-Warming-is-Causing-Extreme-Weather.aspx
Pollution was the most profound idea I took away from the Documentary The 11th Hour. The overflowing landfills and sickeningly polluted bodies of water is something you don't see everyday. The dead fish laying all of the beaches and the amount of oil laying on the surface of bodies of water was hard to see. I didn't realize that this was happening and pollution was having these kind of affects. My view on climate change has definetly changed because I feel like pollution has effected that. If it wasn't for the amount of pollution thats happening then the climate change wouldn't be as bad as it is. It would still be bad but reducing the amount of pollution would make it not as bad.
ReplyDeleteThe most profound thing in the documentary to me was what they do with all the waste that goes into the ocean. I think its terrible the way we get rid of waste like that, it harms so many animals in the process. They could relate to severe weather events because we cause most of this stuff that happens to us by polluting the earth with are cars and the garbage we dispose of in the oceans.Cutting down trees and destroying the environment is also not helping, more and more animals are losing homes and are dying cause they have no place to live. Loss of forests contributes as much as 30 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions each year rivaling emissions from the global transportation sector. Clearing forests for the production of biofuels is causing major concern, as experts contend that it has a significant negative impact on forests without doing much to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
ReplyDeleteThe most profound idea I found from the documentary was how much fossil fuels we have used and how quickly was have used them. At the rate we are using these resources there has become a possible threat of having a major shortage.
ReplyDeleteMy views on climate change were affected by the film after seeing all of the terrible things we are doing to the Earth. All of the pollutants and deforestation are really starting to have a global impact and could soon turn into a world disaster. Unfortunately I don't think there are enough people willing to give up their life style. So the impact of a few people would not be enough to make the earth a cleaner place.
Anthropogenic greenhouse gasses do have relations to severe weather events such as Hurricane Sandy. A hurricane is formed when ocean water has become heated and begins to rise causing cooler air to take its place and begin spinning. The warmer water cools creating clouds that form with the air creating a huge hurricane. When we pollute the atmosphere and destroy the ozone it allows the sun rays to stay trapped and heat the earth which would cause the ocean water to heat up. Thus the beginning of a hurricane.
The most profound idea of the documentary was that the Earth is on a downward spiral, but there is hope if we are able to take immediate action. My views on climate change were solidified with this documentary and now i believe that we need to act now.
ReplyDeleteThe effects that we have on the Earth are profoundly shown in the natural disasters of the past 20 years. Several large scale hurricanes and tsunamis have devastated some areas of the world and our actions have intensified these storms. When we raise the temperatures with our choices of power, we create a weakness that is constantly exploited in these natural disaster.

The most profound thing I heard in the video is pollution and how humans have such an impact to change and prevent much pollution. For example, the oil spill-- how many birds were harmed during the process. As well as the air becoming less healthy for us because of man-made factories and gas.
ReplyDeleteYes, I believe that human activity affects the climate change because the carbon dioxide has increased 30%. And since the Industrial Revelution, more atmospheric nitrogen is fixed by humanity. About 1 quarter of bird species has been driven out to extinction. Saying this, it is clear that humans dominate this planet that we live on.
I defintely believe that deforstation effects the way we live because plants alone provide our air, food, health, water.

The most profound idea I took away from the documentary the 11th hour is that we are more responsible for the well being of the planet than we may think. I can't believe that our population has grown so big in such a short amount of time.
ReplyDeleteGlobal warming can have an effect on the types of disasters that happen to our world in many ways. But the most conclusive way that it impacts our earth is that with the air warming, it creates warm and cold air pockets which contribute to the making of storms. So while a hurricane does happen every year, there was also a lot of little storms that contributed to the damage while the hurricane was happening.

Watching the documentary allowed me to form an opinion on the issue of global climate change. I consider myself an independent, and I like to be educated on issues before I form an opinion, and before watching the documentary I felt like I did not yet know enough about it.
ReplyDeleteThe U.S. is really the only modern nation that has a large political force (the Republican Party) that outright denies the existence of global warming. Other nations might have groups that disagree with its cause or solutions, but across the board, besides the US GOP, it is known that Global Warming is a serious and very real problem. The US GOP makes too many issues an issue of religion, of which this should not be. Many laugh and scoff at people who even discuss climate change as hippies and liberals. As the oceans warm, hurricanes and other systems like those will get stronger, as hurricanes use warm water for fuel to grow stronger. Sandy was more than 800 miles wide, and had a much lower central pressure than any other system at that north of latitude. It likely waked up many people who had otherwise written off global warming as a hoax. The biggest source of blame can be put on the oil companies; like the tabacco companies used to have a stranglehold on congress, the oil companies do today, and they must be defeated. They are the ultimate in evil corporations: they put profits ahead of human life. It is time to overtake the oil companies' influence on our government, and to find other sources of energy.
I did not use any additional sources while writing this; I watch a lot of Colbert and Bill Maher ;).
The most profound idea I took away from the documentary is the fact that we're really harming the earth. I don't believe that humans are the ones who caused global warming, but I do believe we are definitely not helping it. I think that the climate would change regardless of if we were here or not, but we are accelerating the destruction of the earth. Which brings me to my next point of what I took from the film: we are part of the earth. We don't live ON the earth but every single thing we do effects the earth, so we are PART of the earth.
ReplyDeleteAnthopogenic, enhanced greenhouse effect is affecting the weather because of the big reason: Global Warming. The earth was made to be a specific temperature, and because of the human interference of this temperature, the global temperature has risen. When the temperature rises, then hot days get harder, and rainfall becomes heavier. That is creating more storms and heat waves. The summer keeps getting hotter and hotter because the world is being warmed to the extreme. If we continue on this path, who knows what could happen.

ReplyDeleteIt's crazy to me how the way we live is altering our earth for the worst. "Evidence confirms that the post-industrial rise in greenhouse gases does not stem from natural mechanisms." Basically, humans are the reason for the huge increase in the greenhouse gases.
Greenhouse gases help keep the atmosphere, however, there needs to be a balance. The methane gas from our factories and machines, there is not the normal balance for the atmosphere to remain healthy.
"When humans burn gasoline, coal, natural gas, and other common fuels to make electricity or drive cars, they release a substantial amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere."
If we could minimize the amount of methane and carbon dioxide that we release into the atmosphere, then there's a possibility that we could balance out the greenhouse gases again.
After viewing the documentary, I thought it was crazy how many different ways there are to become more energy efficient or more "green". My views on climate change weren't really affected by the documentary because my dad taught me quite a bit about the climate change and Global Warming when I was a little younger, so I already knew most of what they were talking about.
ReplyDeleteI personally don't think that human activity is what causes storms, such as hurricanes. I think human activity affects the climate change, but hurricanes form naturally and have for many years. For example, hurricanes use warm, moist air as energy, and hurricanes form over the ocean where air is already warm and moist. So I don't think it is fair to say that it is our fault that hurricanes are forming.

The most profound idea that I took away from The 11th Hour was when Stephen Hawking said that if we do nothing to stop our global crises, the surface of the Earth could reach 250 degrees centigrade and there would be sulfuric acid raining from the skies, similar to Venus. The human race along with all other life would be exterminated if Earth ever reached this state. This gave me a very deep understanding of what is going on with our Earth and has made me much more aware about the damage we are causing to our planet.
ReplyDeleteSome greenhouse gas emissions are definitely anthropogenic (human caused) and it is increasing the heating of our planet. This, and deforestation have enhanced the greenhouse effect. When we add to the natural level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, it become much thicker and traps in more heat from the Sun. Trees and others plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. There is too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and trees could help reduce that, but we keep cutting them down. We are basically screwing ourselves because the same trees we are cutting down give us oxygen which is what we need to breathe. With the extreme emission of greenhouse gases and deforestation comes accelerated global warming. When the temperature of the Earth changes suddenly, so does the climate. This rapid climate change can lead to major weather problems and huge storms, like Hurricane Sandy, which is causing untold devastation to the East Coast. I believe that global warming is a natural thing that occurs on Earth over long periods of time, but we are accelerating it by adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere and by deforestation.

The most profround idea that I took away from the 11th hour is the idea that one day our planet earth could become similar to venus. The Ozone layer around earths atmosphere is depleting and one day could have a big whole and eventually the earths Ozone layer could be deplenished for good. " if the ozone layer is depleted by human action, the effects on the planet could be catastrophic." If we continue to do harmful things to the Ozone layer many catastrophic things can occur.
ReplyDeleteThe greenhouse gases and deforestation are all caused by anthopgenics. We humans are creating a lot of these problems the world is having with the Ozone layer and all the trees and animal kills around the world. I think deforestation is one of the biggest causes to the world and it being thrown out of balance. Cutting down the trees creates less Oxygen and other gases being admitted and also the gases being taken in. It also kills many animals and decomposers. We as humans are throwing much unnecessary gases into the air which is making the Ozone layer much more thin ultimately causing a hole in the layer eventually destroying our atmosphere. Maybe we have found a few ways to stop emitting the greenhouse gases destroying our Ozone layers but deforestation is permeant and once we have done it, it would take millions of years to replace these regions where we have destroyed them.

The movie 11th hour does make some good points throughout the entirety of the film, this is true but it also seems like it is laiden with bias and pathos to try to guilt people into believing its messages. It's true that most of the things that effect the ozone and atmosphere have been the cause of humans, and that in particular trees and deforestation are some of the main contributors, it could have been done in a less preachy way. The facts from the movie seem more or less accurate in contrast.
ReplyDeleteUpon further research it seems as if there is indeed a scientific consensus on the effects of global warming throughout the scientific community.Scientists are certain that the earth is indeed warming but there is also evidence supporting that it could be part of a cycle. It is generally believed that human actions are what are causing the earth to get warmer. CLOs are trapping greenhouse gasses in the atmopsphere trapping sunlight into the earth, which is a human cause that would surely heat up the earth. We can see how our actions are affecting earth in things like the melting ice in antartica.

It was shocking to see how much our attack on nature affects us. It never occurred to me that the way we were treating nature may make the Earth impossible for us to live in. The world will continue to support life with or without our presence. The adverse effects we have on nature could become so extreme that we could stop the turning of the oceans and the rate of extinction that it would cause would match that of the great K-T extinction. We as a society need to make conservation and green energy a priority.
ReplyDeleteGlobal Warming is a large factor in the violent nature of Hurricane Sandy. A study by NOAA research discovered that the scale of a hurricane is extremely affected by both the water and atmospheric temperature. Another study by scientists at NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory discovered that there would be a 5-12% increase in wind speeds in the northwest tropical Pacific if the surface temperature raises by just 2°C. When present day conditions of hurricanes were compared with enhanced greenhouse gas emissions there was another 5-12% increase in wind speeds. If we do not work to try and prevent the further warming of the ocean, then Hurricane Sandy may only be the beginning.

The most profound idea that I took away from the documentary, the 11th hour, is how massive the issue of global warming is. Leonardo DiCaprio said “Global warming is not only the number one environmental challenge we face today, but one of the most important issues facing all of humanity ... We all have to do our part to raise awareness about global warming and the problems we as a people face in promoting a sustainable environmental future for our planet”, and it is so true. Global warming, even though some think it’s just a cycle, is causing problems worldwide. The warming of the earth is causing violent storms, melting of ice caps, droughts and more. After watching the video I, and hopefully other viewers, will do their part to help prevent global warming. If we don’t stop global warming, life as we know it could end. Not necessarily in our lifetime, but in our children’s lives to come. We need to reduce our consumption of atmosphere polluting energy, like fossil fuels, and our destructive activities such as deforestation. If we all do our part we can make the world a better place.
ReplyDeleteWarmer weather increases the frequency and strength of hurricanes. Warm air and warm water is the main cause of hurricanes. According to about.com, hurricanes are mainly formed when thunderstorms of the cost of Africa drift over the warm ocean (80 degrees F). When the storm moves over the ocean the rapidly evaporating water from the ocean collides with cooler air in the atmosphere, which amplifies the storm and forms bigger clouds that produce more rain and higher winds. Hurricane sandy could possibly be explained by this warming. Since the temperatures are higher now than they historically have been, then the theory of global warming’s effect of natural disasters can be true. The warm air of the hurricane and cooler climate of northern United States collided to form the storm many are referring to as “the frankenstorm”. Sandy has produced more wind and rain than any storm in the northeastern seaboard in at least the last 10 years according to NYC.gov. Global warming is an extremely viable explanation of the increase in powerful storms, not only with hurricane sandy, bit with Irene, and Katrina as well. All three were powerful storms that devastated the communities. Since Global warming can be a cause of these natural disasters we can fix it. We can reduce our use of fossil fuels, our habits of deforestation, and our dependence on unclean energy to reduce the addition of greenhouse gases that cause global warming. If everyone in the world would contribute to the effort just a tiny bit, we can male a huge global impact and begin the cure to global warming.

The most profound thing I learned was that it would cost the world 33 trillion dollars to do what the environment does in regard to stabilizing carbon emission levels. Additionally, the world only has 17 trillion dollars in total revenue each year. My views on global climate change remained the same upon viewing this film. I realize that global climate change, pollution especially, is a huge ordeal and must be changed if we are to continue to prosper as a civilization.
ReplyDeleteObviously with less plantation on the Earth, there will be a resultant of more carbon dioxide in the air. Unfortunately though, the carbon dioxide levels are being further raised because of the pollution and green house gases being continually emitted each day by our population, especially in the United States. In regards to hurricanes such as Sandy, scientific evidence has proven that the winds will be "5-12% stronger if the Pacific's sea surface temperature increases by only 2 degrees Celsius."

The most profound idea I took away from The 11th Hour would be how extreme the Ozone Depletion was becoming. My views were changed after seeing that movie because it opened my eyes to a lot of negative things that the human population is doing to the Earth and its environment. Due to our anthopogenic ways through our industrialization and over use of our resources, we have been causing many problems to the atmosphere and also causing weather changes. Like Hurricane Sandy and Global Warming, all these events have been because of our lack of caring about the Earth.
ReplyDeleteMass species extinction I thought was the most interesting part. I loved how they showed how if you remove an acre of forest it taked millions of years to come back. I think our climate is always changing and will never be the same. Humans that burn gasses and other things, eliminate the greenhouse gasses. Clearing out forest is just stupid. They have been there forever and to get rid of all those resouces it provids is just stupid.

The 11th Hour was a very informational and effective documentary that really scared me about the future of the human race. The most profound idea that I took away the documentary was that we, humans, are slowly killing Earth. We are the "virus" that is deteriorating this wonderful planet. This film really changed my views on climate change. I was very convinced that global warming is in effect today and that people have the power to prevent it.
ReplyDeletePeople can definitely make severe weather events more dangerous. For example, according to NOAA Research, it is said that a higher sea surface temperature can increase the severity of a hurricane, for the storms actually reach its upper-limit intensity (Global Warming and Hurricanes). This would be the result of enhanced greenhouse gas effect as fossil fuels contribute in heating up the Earth. Deforestation prones to create more deserts, which can cause droughts in many areas, as there are less trees and grass to store water. The harm that people are afflicting on the Earth today creates dire consequences for the future.

The biggest concept I took away was that it is not the pollution, or global heating, or melting of the ice caps that is the issue... the issue is the way we think. We are a capitalistic consumeristic society that does not live within nature, rather we destroy it and create our own environment (a much uglier one). I didnt know I could despise multinational corporations more than I did, until I watched the documentary and realized how massive the impact of the corporations on the environment really is. We are the United Corporations of America, and its rather sad.
ReplyDeleteThe hurricanes nowadays are evidently stronger and longer than those before global warming began, and today's are weak compared to what is to come. The NOAA's office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research stated that "storms that do approach their upper-limit intensity are expected to be slightly stronger in the warmer climate due to the higher sea surface temperatures." This is a direct result of global warming.

I found the point that stood out to me the most wasn't a negative fact but the fact that we currently have over one million environmental and humanitarian organizations working world wide to help our world and environment. This was big to me because I knew there were many organizations but I didn't know there were that many and how motivated the people of our world are to keep our world clean. My views were definitely changed after I watched this documentary. Before this video, I knew that there were problems in deforestation and the ozone layer along with global warming but I didn't really think much of it. I didn't really think much of it because I was always given statistics about our world and I can't always trust stats but when I saw real world examples, it really hit home. It really made me look at the world around me and my actions differently and in a different perspective.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Global Warming, deforestation and the enhanced green house effect are all affecting the weather and thus enhanced the power of hurricane Sandy. Mainly the greenhouse effect caused Sandy to be bigger. Since more and more UV are being trapped, the oceans are warming. This warming of the ocean causes higher sea level because of the melting of ice caps. Warmer surface water evaporates more readily into vapor, making it easier for small ocean storms to escalate into larger, more powerful systems. This is what caused Sandy to turn into such a powerful storm. If we are not able to slow down the heating of the climate but especially our oceans, then the hurricanes that our world witnesses, will continually become bigger and bigger. Also when water is warmer, it contains more energy than that of cold water and this could also lead to bigger storms. Also, if we don't get our climate under control, the number of natural disasters is predicted to increase as well as these disasters will be weather on steroids.

In my opinion, the most important thing in the documentary, The 11th Hour was when it was telling us about global warming. It is such a huge concern for our future, and we are informed that the Earth has warmed by seven tenths of a degree Fahrenheit in only one year. That may seem small to us, but actually it is a large amount. There is a possibility that our planet Earth can become like planet Venus, and if that were to happen we would clearly not be able to survive due to the extreme temperatures. History repeats itself, and we can’t ignore global warming. After watching the film, it made me realize that we need to reduce the burning of fossil fuels. Tropical deforestation and fossil fuel burning cause global warming. The thing is we are destroying our Earth, and people are careless. We are the cause of global warming and some people don’t believe that we are the root cause of global warming. Our ice glaciers are slowly starting to melt, and sea levels are rising. We’ve had many wake up calls and we have all the evidence that this problem is occurring, we just need to step up and make a difference. Instead of letting all of this continue.
ReplyDeleteI believe that these weather events are related to human activity because we are burning our natural resources and fossil fuels at a faster rate than ever before, and temperature has increased at a similar accelerated rate. These factors prove that these weather events are partly, if not completely anthropogenic. Deforestation is something that can be avoided, farmers don’t need to go and cut down parts of a rainforest just so they can grow their crops and make money. Once a rainforest is cut down, we cannot “re-grow” another rainforest. We humans destroy nature, and it affects our weather because the gases that we release change the climate in an, often detrimental manner. Which is the reason we have hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis etc.

The 11th Hour was filled was many different testimonies, some more effective than others. The one that stood out the most to me was Herman Daly’s. His explanation of the association of the environment and the economy was startling and eye opening. I always knew there was something connecting the two, but the way he described it really put into perspective of how closely the two are related. He stated that the biosphere had to be sacrificed so that economic growth could occur, and how our economy continues to grow but our biosphere can’t. His feature in the movie, though covering ideas most know, made everything understandable and put these ideas in a way that awakened my mind to the true extent of what he was saying. We are giving up our biosphere for our economy, and if continued one day there won’t be any more to give up.
ReplyDeleteBefore researching whether or not hurricanes were anthropogenic, I believed them just to be causes of nature. I had no idea that there was a debate on if humans had a cause in these natural disasters. From the research, I do believe that the severity of Hurricane Katrina and Sandy was an effect of global warming. Kevin Trenberth said, “The sea surface temperatures are a little warmer, the whole environment is a bit wetter, there’s more humidity, and that’s the main fuel for hurricanes.” Along with this quote many provide a graph that shows a connection between the increase in the intensity of hurricanes and the increase in global warming. Although none of this information can be considered conclusive it still provides evidence that there is a possible connection between the two, and I believe the connection to be true.

The most profound idea that I took away from the documentary came from the graphs that showed the various things that are significantly higher than they have ever been before and that this is most likely caused by humans. I knew that we were having an impact on the environment, but seeing the actual numbers and charts makes it seem so much more real. My views didn't change, but they were enhanced as to just how significant this really is. I knew that we needed to reverse the trend, but I didn't realize just how apparent the problem really is and that we need to fix it immediately, not just make a change in the future.
ReplyDeleteThe enhanced greenhouse effect is slowly causing the earth to heat up (global warming) and the increase in the temperature leads to an increase in the temperature of the oceans. This means that more water is evaporating, and leads to a higher frequency of hurricanes, and more powerful hurricanes when they do occur. This not only leads to more droughts and hurricanes, but also to more "localized storms and tornadoes" (acoolerclimate.com). The warming trend also increases evaporation on land, which leads to more droughts in the already dry areas of the world, such as Arizona or the Sahara Desert. Droughts are becoming more and more apparent, and " the amount of land on earth suffering from drought conditions has doubled since 1970" (acoolerclimate.com). Due to global warming thanks to an anthopogenic, enhanced greenhouse effect, our way of life, even life itself, is being threatened.

The most profound idea that I took away from this movie is that we are continually to cut down nature when it really only helps us. Nature does things for our world that we are not able to do and we are taking it away from us. For example the trees release oxygen for us and take out carbon dioxide. In the movie one of the researchers said that if were to replace the things nature did for us with machines it would cost us billions of dollars. It amazes how ignorant the world, especially America, can be towards nature. We take it for gradient and one day it will no longer be here and it will be very hard for us to try and function without it.
ReplyDeleteI believe that greenhouse gases have a lot to do with severe weather. Some scientists have found that the climate of America has become more extreme in the last decade. They have calculated that there is a 90 to 95 percent chance that the nation's climate is being affected by increasing concentrations of gases like carbon dioxide. With hurricane Sandy I believe that these greenhouse gases have something to do with it being such a super storm. Hurricanes are inevitable but they have strengthen over the years especially with hurricane Sandy. The sea level has risen 7 inches compared to what they were at the turn of the 20th century. This made it easier for Sandy to reach over the sea walls. What also made Sandy so dangerous was the temperature of the sea on the east coast was unusually high for this time of the year, linking with global warming. There are many reasons to believe that greenhouse gases helped strengthen Sandy

I found the movie to be entertaining to watch and I found some of the things they said interesting. They brought up hurricane Katrina in the movie and said how this is only the beginning, that the worst is yet to come. This got my attention because hurricane Katrina seemed like that's the worst it could get, but now they're saying thats nothing compared to what it could become. Another thing they mentioned was about asthma in children. Used to you would never hear about asthma much, and now many more kids have it because of the way our environment is today. My views on climate change weren't really changed by this film, but it did open my eyes to things concerning our planet.
ReplyDeleteSome scientists argue whether severe weather events are because of global warming or not. The recent storm hurricane Sandy has brought up this topic again and what I found was interesting. One website explains that "global warming may not have 'caused' Sandy, but it makes Sandy-like storms more probable." In other words, in the future we should expect storms similar to that of sandy because of global warming.

Even though I did not get to watch the full documentary, I learned a lot in the last 10 minutes of The 11th Hour. The documentary was very assuring that our planet it self will be just fine, but in fact it is actually ourselves causing the majority of the damage. In reality, it is ourselves we should be concerned about. All of the natural resources that have been fueling our species explosive population growth for the past two hundred years are finite, and once they run out or become too contaminated, we will begin to pay the price. Humanity seems to be the reason why our Earth is facing all these problems.
ReplyDeleteMany people believe that greenhouse effect and anthopgenic is the reason why we are facing natural disasters such a Hurricane Sandy, I on the other hand do not. These events are called “natural disasters” for a reason; nothing we did made these catastrophic events happen. Even though humanity is one of the biggest contributing factors to global warming, I do not believe that we had anything to do with severe weather such as hurricanes. A natural disaster is defined as anything such as a hurricane, tornado, earthquake, etc. These things happen for different reasons but not once has human activity been the reason why we’ve had a tornado or an earthquake. These all come from weather and we as people do not have any effect the weather.
Watching “ The 11th Hour” changed my prospective on the topics that were discussed. We take such a big part in the climate that we have today. I never knew climate change was such a big deal till now. Climate change affects the ozone, global warming, the ocean, animals, and plants. Anthropogenic, greenhouse gas emission, and deforestation all have to do with one another. Humans are not being careful with what they’re doing to the earth so they can cause greenhouse emissions and deforestation therefore causing severe weather effects. If we don’t change the way we live then we will have severe outcomes because of it. Watching the movie made me realize how big of a change we need to make on this earth.

What I took away most from the 11th hour, was the idea that we, the human race, can affect the future of our planet and how long we last. Right now humans are the biggest contributor to the problems we face environmentally every day. Every day activities that we think don't have an impact actually are critical to the future of the Earth. For example, every day things such as what we eat, what we throw away, the amount of water we use, and the amount of electricity use, if they were reduced by even the slightest margin by every being of this planet could go along ways into saving our world. With water we need to cutback because if we don't the amount of drinkable water is going to decreased at a drastic rate until there will be no sources for future generations to come. With what we eat if we didn't each large quantities of meat the way we do it could keep populations such as pigs and cows around for much longer then they will be now. Every little step we take towards a "green" society will only better ourselves, the community, and our world as a whole.
ReplyDeleteSome links between hurricane sandy and climate change include: Warmer ocean temperature, moister air, and sea leves. Because of human impact the sea level has rose seven inches since the early 20th century. Also becuase of human impact we have caused a rise in average sea temperature. These influences include dropping are waste into the sea.

The documentary broadened my view of the world today, and how much it has changed in the last century alone. I believe we as humans have been using the world to satisfy our greed. This makes us naĆÆve, and we overlook problems that face our world. For instance some people could care less about cutting down an entire acre of trees unless it doesn’t directly benefit them, but what they don’t realize is that the long term benefits out way the short ones. Another problem we are overseeing right now is dealing with our pollution. It’s hard enough to find ways in dealing with our trash and with the world’s growing population; it makes it just that much harder to control. These are just a few problems that the video has enlightened me about. Now when it comes to Global Warning, I believe that there are a lot of people, not aware that this is not the first time that the Earth has been continuously becoming warmer. I personally think that most people, who believe in global warming, think that it is solely due to an anthopogenic change. Which is not true, because the Earth has gone through several ice ages throughout its existence. Though I do not believe in Global Warming, I do believe the humans have slightly sped up this process due to things like car emissions, burning oil and ect. I also do not believe that storms, like Hurricane Sandy, can be in influenced by the existence of the human species.

The 11th hour taught me that there are major issues facing our planet besides just global warming. It taught me that we need to change the way we are living to keep the Earth inhabitable for us. My own views on the climate change were slightly affected, but I would need to see more and investigate on my own to have my views be significantly changed.
ReplyDeleteI do not believe that you can say that global warming is causing these hurricanes even though there is correlation between hotter water and more frequent and more intense hurricanes. "You cant take one rogue event like this and start ascribing anything but the current three phasing conditions that are leading to it," said David Robinson, a professor at Rutgers. These events could be isolated or they could be due to something larger in scale. There is no way we can truly tell at the moment.

This documentary illuminated the current environmental issues that may come back to haunt the human population in the near future. The most profound idea that I took away from the documentary is the astounding fact that our human drive for more resources is truly eliminating and forcing many species of animals to extinction. Even though I knew that our human involvement in rainforests have depleted some resources for animals to thrive, I did not know that we were literally driving certain species to extinction. In essence, the most profound idea that I took away from the documentary was the fact that we humans are forcing certain populations of animals into near extinction.
ReplyDeleteHumans' anthropogenic desires, such as massive deforestation in rainforest to use the rainforests' rich nutrient soil for farming, is negatively impacting the weather in such a way that severe storms, and possibly severe hurricanes like Hurricane Sandy, can be caused by an increase in greenhouse gas emission. According to ScienceDaily News, the increase in temperature throughout the Earth, partly caused by increased greenhouse gas emission, is causing severe storms throughout the world. If this is true and is proven by other scientific data, then we humans must realize that our anthropogenic actions, such as deforestation, can and will haunt us in the near future.

One profound topic that I really took to heart was deforestation. I have never realized how much of an effect destroying our trees and forest would have on our environment. Because of watching this video it made me open my eyes and really be careful about keeping trees safe to where they won't die.
ReplyDeleteI don't really believe that because of what we have done to our earth caused the hurricane sandy. There are probably some aspects like global warming that cause these things to occur in the beginning.
The idea in the 11th hour that stood out to me the most was the imminent mass extinction event, that is inherently rooted in the burning of fossil fuels, and the extensive deforestation of the forests of the world. Little true wild earth remains, most all of our land has been tainted by the scourge of human industry and technology. Specifically things like the oil industry, and the massive destruction of the Amazon rainforest that is happening everyday. My views on climate change after viewing this documentary were not changed very much, but my views on the world's industry and economy altered greatly. This documentary enlightened me on the blatant environmental crimes that have become so common in the world today, and that without immediate and drastic change, the consequences of the crimes may prove to be irreversible.
ReplyDeleteThe greenhouse gases that humans are releasing are the driving forces in many of the climate issues we are seeing today. Events such as Katrina and Sandy are thought by most to be caused mainly by these gases that we have released and gave impetus to global warming. After watching this documentary and reading other information, humans are the primary catalysts of today's climate changes that will prove in the future to affect this great planet in a very big way.

The most profound idea that I took away from this documentary is how much humans are hurting the environment. Also something that was surpriseing, was that if we continue on our current path, humans could soon make Earth inhabitable. My views have definitely changed on climatge change by this film. I realize now how much damage we are creating the environment, and that we need to make more changes in order to create a brighter future.
ReplyDeleteHeat waves across America are lasting longer and longer, and scientist say that this is normal witht the happening of global warming. More extreme weather has happened this past summer while there was a long heat wave. For example, the derecho in the eastern United States that knocked out power for millions, and also the forest fires that happened in Colorado. Climate change doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to cause a storm, but it can affect how big a storm can be. The climate3 change lately was a factor in determining how big huirrricane Sandy came to be. Scientist claimed that climate change is a direct variable to how big natural disasters like hurricane Snadt can be.

While watching the 11th hour, it really opened my eyes about how much we as humans have really destroyed our Earth. Sure, some say that we are just going through a natural heating/cooling pattern of our Earth, but I believe that the cause is almost all anthropogenic. We do not value this beautiful Earth that we are lucky to live on. I know that I am guilty of commiting these harmful acts on our Earth because I drive my car, litter, and don't recycle as much as I should. After viewing this film however it made me realize that our planet, as much as we think so, is NOT invincible. We need to start making major strides to take care of it.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, hurricanes are caused by warm water and warm/moist air. The creation of this warmer climate could definetley be caused by humans. Us burning fossil fuels, pollution from factories, and not being "green", contributes to global warming, which in turn heats up our planet making the air, water, and temperature rise. All of this could very easily be related to the hurricanes that we have experienced, Katrina, and that we're expericing currently, Sandy. Hopefully, with a reduction of this anthropogenic destruction, we can better control the climate of our Earth and prevent catastrophic events like these.
The most profound Idea I took from this video is that all of these issues is effecting the earth in many different ways. My views on the climate is that the temperature changes every second of the day and will never be the same.
ReplyDeleteAnthropogenic is all done by humans and the only way to stop this issue is by the people doing it themselves. And the greenhouse effect is effecting the energy and the sources in the air. Also deforestation is really effecting the agriculture for animals and for humans . In all I really don't think these helped cause the hurricane sandy. Because of none of these really effect a hurricane in the ocean these are really effects of the air and the earths structure.

The most surprising idea that I took away from “The 11th Hour” was how fast the climate is changing.
The most profound idea presented in the documentary to me was the idea that humans are a part of the earth. We are not seperate from the "lesser" of the species as many of us may think. What humans do affects the earth. As a part of this earth we have the apportunity to better or worsen the earth through our actions. This helped me see humans relationship with the earth seperately.
ReplyDelete"Enhanced Greenhouse Effect." Air Pollution - Global Warming - Climate Change - Acid Rain - Ozone Hole. N.p., n.d. Web. 5 Nov. 2012. .
The natural greenhouse effect captures gases and heat and traps them inside the earths atmosphere. This helps keep balence on the eath and it helps sustain life. The enhanced greenhouse effect is caused by humans releasing more chemicals into the enviorment and bruning fossil fuels. This increases the amount of CO2, methane and nitrous oxide. This increase of chemicals causes the earth to heat up. This unatural heating of the earth causes weather related disasters such as tsunamis or hurricanes. The increased greenhouse effect could very well be a cause of Hurricane Sandy in New York. Due to how humans are treating our enviorment and releases too many chemicals it is basically throwing the earth out of wack as I like to say. We are causing disasters that are becoming normal to us.
Throughout the documentary, the specialists talked about how global warming was a huge contributing factor to today's day and age. This opened my eyes to how much global warming affects everything in our world, and without watching this documentary I don't think I would have known as much about it as I do now.
ReplyDeleteDeforestation and the greenhouse gases are big contributors to weather events, such as Hurricane Sandy. These factors are anthopogenic, meaning they are human induced. I think they are big contributors due to the size amount of each. Deforestation is an irreversible happening, and grows larger and larger each day. This reduces the amount of oxygen given off by the plants that were removed, and leaves more CO2 in the atmosphere. The more CO2 in the air, the greater the greenhouse gases, and this increases the ozone depletion level. The ozone depletion level is actually a hole that is located over the Antarctic region. This hole is not only very unsafe for people to live under, but is also one of the reasons for global warming, since more UV rays can get into the geosphere, affecting the biosphere. The warming melts the ice caps causing hurricanes. For example, when an ice cube melts, the water from it is still cold. The same thing happens with the melting ice caps. When the UV rays melt the ice caps, that water is still cold. However, this water mixes with warm tropical waters, hurricanes are created. This is how Hurricane Sandy could have been formed.
An idea that i took away from the video is about energy and the connection the issues of between global changes. Energy from the sun drives Earth’s external processes, such as weather ocean circulation and erosion. If we didn’t have the Sun, our Earth would not be able to process. The 11th hour makes me realize how important this is, but also how each of the connecting factors such as deforestation, ozone depletion, and global warming all interconnect. When one changes it effects the others. Before watching the video I had very little knowledge that these things were so viral on our planet. It opened my eyes to the reality of what is happening in the place we live.
ReplyDeleteAnthropogenic enhanced the greenhouse effect due to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation. I believe this to be true because the more we create things for our selves the more pollution we are creating, this causes an increase in absorbing of heat and reradiating it to Earth’s surface. I believe that his could be a huge source of how the Earth below is is reacting to the way we are adding heat of our own, on top of the natural process This relates to Sandy because of high water and moister temperatures. If we are adding to the heat of Earth at a much faster rate than naturally, I do believe that this is a huge cause of Anthropogenic and it definitely effects the enhancing of the greenhouse effect.

I had no clue that deforestation was irreversible and unchangeable. I thought if you just planted more trees you’d be fine, but this documentary taught me that that’s not true. This film has taught me that we need to be more environmentally friendly if we don’t want to ruin our world. Most of all I think deforestation should stop. We need trees to live, so it doesn’t make any sense why we would cut them down, and destroy the animals that live in them.
ReplyDeleteFewer trees mean more carbon dioxide in our atmosphere and an increased greenhouse effect, meaning more global warming, which causes changes in our weather. Global warming had four effects on Hurricane Sandy. First it warms the sea level, making it rise, which in turn makes storm surges more destructive. Second, the sea surface temperature is higher due to human activities and the increased water vapor in the atmosphere leads to more rainfall and increases the risk of flooding. Third, water vapor and higher ocean temperatures help fuel the storm, making it bigger and more intense. Fourth, global warming may push or make a storm by an area that it usually doesn’t happen by. By not being ecofriendly, and stopping deforestation we could really damage the world we live in.

Seth Slover:
ReplyDeleteWhile watching the documentary, The 11th Hour, I was struck by the undeniable evidence that there this supporting the fact that destructive human behaviors are impacting the Earth in countless ways – not just global warming. Though there were numerous topics discussed in the video that stood out to me, one thing really hit home more than any other. A man was interviewed in the documentary, and he said that most humans hold a false view of our relationship with nature. Many people, he said, believe nature exists outside of us and is only there for us to take its resources. On the contrary, we ARE nature and we interact with other forms of life to make up nature as a whole. In other words, our actions directly affect the Earth, the biosphere, and more. That really changed my perspective in looking at the way that I affect our environment and our world every day. Largely because of this revelation, I also began to look at climate change differently. At first I was skeptical as to how much of the climate change was a result of humans, but the fact that things have changed so drastically at the same time that we humans have been more populated and more involved in hurting the Earth just makes it impossible to deny the impact that we have on the climate change.
Severe weather events, particularly hurricanes and more specifically Hurricane Sandy, have undoubtedly been affected by anthropogenic actions and greenhouse gases. Studies have shown that as the CO2 level has increased (as we have released more greenhouse gases and cut down more trees), the average wind speed of hurricanes has increased by 5-12 miles per hour, thus making storms that would already occur even worse than they would have originally been. Aside from greenhouse warming, there are still additional anthropogenic actions that have affected natural disasters. For instance, there is speculation that things such as aerosols, greenhouse gases, volcanic activity, solar variability, and internal climate variability may all play a role in increased number of hurricanes and an increased amount of rainfall. Such man-induced results surely played a role with hurricanes such as Sandy and Katrina, both which were storms made worse by

The Most profound idea to me was deforestation. Due to our heavy use of fossil fuels, need for space, and industrialism, our generation has indeed created a substancial increase in greenhouse gasses. We are the biosphere, what we do affects everything else on the plannet. i believe our emmisions of green house gasses has disrupted the geosphere, the atmosphere, and the hydrosphere, causing a severe weather outbreak, hurricane sandy.
ReplyDeleteThere were many subjects in the video of the 11th hour, but one of the most important things that I took out of the video would be a quote that was said at the end, " The world will live forever, but we won't". It is somewhat humorous because humans tend to label themselves as the "supreme species" which may be true for certain things but after we have consciously and selfishly taken all of the resources and used them without thinking about the consequences eventually the Earth will "regenerate" and go back to normal and human will no longer be able to ruin the Earth any longer. Every action we humans take will and does affect the Earth, and the more we grow in numbers the more harm is made and the faster the Earth is dying. Due to the lack of Earth friendly machines, recycling, and other non-harmful things we have caused a depletion in the ozone layer, faster deforestation and an increase in global warming. Example, destroying trees can cause a lack of summertime cooling because tree leaves prevent some of the suns energy from reaching the ground. Everything that humans do makes an impact on the Earth, whether it is positive or negative.

I had no idea how directly our actions could come back to bite us. In the film it said, "there are too many of us using too many resources too fast". People think that things like their amount of gas or recycling efforts (or lack thereof) don't matter or count, but they do. Everyone seems to have that mind set of "I'm just one person, it won't make a difference", so when it accumulates, it creates a huge problem. Several people think that saving the environment isn't as important as saving people, which I absolutely agree with, but this film definitely shows that contributing to environmental efforts indirectly helps mankind.
ReplyDeleteGreenhouse gases are the root of global warming and "burning carbon-based substances like oil, gas, and especially coal produces billions of tons of extra carbon dioxide each year" (Greene), such substances are caught in the atmosphere and make things like hurricanes all the worse. According to an article in the Huffington Post, "Climate change does not cause hurricanes and storms like Sandy... but climate change makes them worse " (Greene), which is exactly as I would've guessed. Warmer climate allows wind to travel faster, making a hurricane more severe. Moisture and humidity act as fuel to a hurricane. Like I mentioned earlier, trying to preserve our environment also helps humans. If our CO2 levels weren't so high in the atmosphere, it is possible that Sandy would not be as destructive as it is, ultimately saving lives.
Greene, Richard. "Bill Nye on Sandy, Climate Change and the 2012 Election." The Huffington Post. TheHuffingtonPost.com, 02 Nov. 2012. Web. 05 Nov. 2012. .
Watching this documentary made me realize how much we as the human race have an impact on the earth, and that it is entirely up to the human population to take care of it, and save it, try to reverse the damage we have already caused on our only home. We can't just live here dumping our trash, and burning the rain forests without suffering the consequences. This documentary was so in-depth, and had so much proof of the damage we're doing in so many places, it was really profound.
ReplyDeleteHurricane Sandy, and most all other hurricanes and severe storms from past years have been heavily impacted through anthropogenic greenhouse emissions. More greenhouse gases trap chemicals inside the atmopshere and raise the temperature of the sea surface, which makes hurricanes more likely to start and much more likely to continue and gain strength as they go, possibly hitting a land-based destination that would cause severe destruction.

Although I was not in class for a majority of the film I was moved by ideas presented to me in The 11th Hour. I have always been a believer in the idea of people, especially America, going green. However, I did not think the importance of living a greener life was as significant as the film portrayed. The 11th Hour definitely showed me how low on time we are to save our planet from our own destruction. Although my opinion was already sided with that of the film, The 11th Hour emphasized the importance of taking action now and not wasting time to save Earth from our wastes. I was positively affected by the film's ideas and felt extremely motivated to put an end to our bad living habits. One thing that stood out to me the most was when we saw that America is only 6 percent of the world's population, but is responsible for 30 percent of the waste. This fact specifically stood out to me because it shows that our lifestyle it physically impossible to spread throughout the globe. We as Americans are a huge problem and need to lower our wasteful lifestyles because we are not designed to go through so much of the Earth's resources and the Earth is not able to handle this much waste from so little of the population.
ReplyDeleteAs for the global warming issue relating to storms, I believe it is a factor. Natural disasters are, of course, naturally created. However, I agree with the idea that the severity of these storms are linked to global warming. I read into the issue on an article regarding global warming and Hurricane Sandy. This Huffington post article stated both sides of the issue but emphasized the scientific link to global warming. Overall, it said our oceans are are higher and our air is warmer and more moist, a breeding ground for tropical storms. So although storms can be blamed on random chance, the conditions we have created on Earth over the years have a link to the increasing severity of hurricanes and natural disasters. The article said something specifically shocking to me. The article had a quote from Bill McKibben, an environmentalist, which stated "But we live in a world where -- and no one doubts this -- the atmosphere over that ocean is 5 percent moister on average than when I was born. We've done very big things on this earth -- that's the point. It's not the one we were given, it's increasingly one we've made." This stood out to me because he is a professional on this issue and he has seem these changes in his own lifetime. The changes we are forcing upon our planet are happening rapidly and Earth can no longer keep up. We are rapidly deteriorating our planet and need to make quick, major changes as soon as we can. This article emphasized that idea because if we are already suffering from extreme natural disasters linked to global warming, what will happen if we do not stop? How big will these disasters grow to be? What if we never slow down? We are taking our planet for granted and soon it could let us down. We are running down our world far too quickly for it to keep up much longer.

I do not ever remember studying "anthropogenic" causes of climate change before reviewing this documentary and then further discussing in class. By our constant deforestation, which is one example of the causes of climate change, we are destroying trees which will never be able to grow back, and with our constant growth in population, the problem will not lie with the planet, but rather our well beings. What I enjoyed learning about was that our anthopogenic cycle is actually causing us to commit suicide very slowly because in the end, it is us who suffer when the resources run out, not the planet. We will end up paying the price for our lack of action. Before reviewing this film, I could never physically understand the impacts we have on Earth...but after watching the physical distress our planet endures when we pollute the water with contaminants, I could clearly understand the aftermath we produce.
ReplyDeleteBoth deforestation and an increase in greenhouse gas emissions can tremendously affect the severity of a hurricane or the production of a hurricane at all. Why you ask? Well lets start with deforestation. Because of massive amounts of trees which are cut down, hurricanes are able to create more damage in the first place. "In Half a world away, the impoverished island of Haiti suffers severely every time a moderately strong hurricane passes through. Why are hurricanes so destructive in Haiti? Deforestation is at least partially to blame." This area has seen massive deforestation, like I said before, and because of so much land which is cleared, whenever there is a heavy rainstorm, such as this one in 2008, or one like Hurricane Sandy, the water quickly saturates the ground, and you get erosion and mudslides, and the flooding is nearly uncontrollable. According to K. N. Singer, "These sorts of environmental effects resulting from Haiti's deforestation are part of what keeps Haitians in poverty - and keeps the US pouring in dollars to try to fix Haiti's problems. Despite the billions of dollars in US aid, the poverty continues - at least in part due to rape of the land over many decades." This barren island of Haiti is a sad forecaster of what will happen to many other countries who similarly destroy their forests. And greenhouse gas emissions you ask? Well, highlighted in NOAA research, it is actually acclaimed that "the strongest hurricanes in the present climate may be upstaged by even more intense hurricanes over the next century as the earth's climate is warmed by increasing levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere." It is said that most hurricanes don't reach their maximum potential intensity before weakening over land or cooler ocean regions. This means that hurricanes are less severe if they hit land or cooler regions. But what happens when our land is not as cool anymore? Those storms that do approach their upper-limit intensity are expected to be slightly stronger in the warmer climate due to the higher sea surface temperatures. And we have seen an increase in temperature at these places, and therefore an increase in the severity of the storms/hurricanes, like Hurricane Sandy which just passed through, as well.

I was surprised by how much humans have an effect towards the environment and how much worse we have made it over the years. I never realized how badly simple things like reproducing have such a huge impact on our environment and can lead to the drastic changes that have happened over the years. I had no idea how bad the climate had changed before watching this video and seeing how it has extremely changed over the years and what has all gone wrong to it had surprised me so much, I had no idea.
ReplyDeleteWe're cutting down trees for supplies that we need and farmers are cutting down acres of trees for more farm land and you can never replace that fertile land after you've destroyed it. The pollution harms the oceans, and causes the waves to change directions and everything we do to the oceans cause the hurricanes to occur in certain areas.
The most profound idea I took away from this great documentary would have to be that global warming is not only the number one environmental challenge we face today, but one of the most important issues facing all of humanity. I’ve always thought global warming was a huge issue, but never like the documentary described. My view has totally changed from slightly caring, to actually wanting to do something to help the future generation.
ReplyDeleteHurricane Sandy has had negative impact on New York, and may be caused from greenhouse emissions. I don't know if I completely believe a hurricane with that much power could be caused by greenhouse gas emissions. I do however believe that resulting storm surge along the Atlantic coast was almost certainly intensified by decades of sea-level rise linked to human emissions of greenhouse gases. All these events make you really wonder how much more needs to happen before global warming is taken seriously.

The most interesting thing I took from the film was the idea to engineer buildings like trees. This idea blindsided my thoughts on engineering and opened me up to thinking of converting the cities into "concrete jungles." Yes, one might argue that the phrase was coined because cities are already concrete jungles, but what if engineers and architects took the phrase one step further- making cities as photosynthetic as the Amazon or other jungles? I thought the process could be plausible but it would take time. The idea amazed me because it was something I had never heard before and it could potentially be something that changes the course of our global footprint.
ReplyDeleteAn increased greenhouse effect adds more stress onto severe weather events and patterns resulting in devastating storms such as Hurricane Sandy. This hurricane's high intensity could be attributed by high surface temperatures. What raised the temperature of the ocean's surface has been directly associated to anthropogenic causes. Part of the reason Hurricane Sandy hit the U.S. coast was because of winter weather patterns that blocked the storm from heading into England.

The most profound idea that I took away from the documentary was the different climate changes that are affecting us humans every single day of our lives. Fact is people don’t take that under consideration that if things due change in earth at a dramatic rate such as the Earths weather and climate change, then it will change humans life forever along with the environment that we are living on today. When I watched the film 11th hour my views on climate changed. My perspective changed on how serious climate changing can influence humans in mostly in a negative way. Also how Global warming will affect us greatly if we don’t do anything about it soon. We might not be affected as bad now, but our children and perhaps our children’s children will be affected with this dramatic change in the Earth. That’s why when I watch the film the 11th hour, it made me think how humans are supposed to deal with this dramatic changes that are occurring now, and what are we supposed to do when it’s too late, and the human race has collapsed. The Earth will still be here, but we won’t.
ReplyDeleteThe 4 Earth changing events, anthropogenic, enhanced greenhouse effect, greenhouse gas emissions, and deforestation causes the Earth to change in a way that even scientist can’t explain. The reason how anthropogenic changes the Earth is because it’s affecting the Earth’s atmosphere, which is caused by pollution by carbon dioxide released from cars. This is one of the reasons we have severe weather changing events. Another reason why Earths severe weather is changing is because enhanced greenhouse effect is adding up into our atmosphere due to atmospheric concentration of GHGs due to emission from humans. Deforestation is the biggest change due to Earths severe weather changing, because the effects of deforestation are permanent and irreversible, and trees real eases oxygen, which humans keep taking away by cutting trees.
Earths severe weather changing are affecting humans every day, specially people that has crops, when at one time rain use to happen often and now the place that use to be good for farming, it’s all dried up and nothing can grow. Millions of people are affected by this dramatic weather changing not just the farmers.

ReplyDeleteThe most profound thing I got from the documentary was that our Earth is in far more worse condition then I knew. I actually saw footage of all these hundreds and hundreds of trees being wiped out and how the soil looked afterwords. It was so sad, but so real. I also never realized how much we, humans, pollute this world. I saw so much garbage that it was very eye opening to the reality of where my trash goes! My views on climate change were definitely affected by this film. I now see why there are things like global warming happening! People here on this world are a huge contributor to the reason why we are loosing so many resources and the climate is changing.
An increase in green house gas emissions and deforest station relate to these severe weather events because taking out trees increases our carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which can change the weather dramatically. This is caused be humans because we are the ones responsible for clearing out large portions of our trees.

The most profound thing I took from the movie "The 11th Hour" was the quote "When we all talk about 'saving the environment' in a way it's misstated because the environment is going to survive. We are the ones who may not survive. Or we may survive in a world we don't particularly wanna live in. " Which applies to all of us. Even the environmentalists. We live our life in ways that damage the Earth, but ultimately we're only damaging ourselves, and I had never thought of it in that way, but it's totally true and really opened my eyes.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts of the Climate Change were affected because now I really see who it's affecting, and it's really mindblowing.
IMDb. IMDb.com, n.d. Web. 05 Nov. 2012. .
I am definitely more aware of the pollution around me because of the documentary. Many of the things I had known about but the movie brought a new light about how devastating our environmental state is as of now. Here's my problem: I want to help change the planet but I'm not sure what I can do. I'm not a scientist although the subject fascinates me, and I can't fathom ways of expressing the importance of environmental issues through my main interest of entertainment without it seeming cheesy or lacking the pull to get everyone involved. People who live off of factories and make millions of dollars will continue to use factories, and many people won't collaborate with the improvement of the environment strictly because of inconveniences. It's a cynical way of looking at it, but realistically, that will happen unless there is some sort of event or innovative idea/strategy of cleaning up our planet. I would love to help find that idea or strategy and express it through entertainment somehow, and even if I live in an urban environment I'll try my best to go green. This was a bit of the tangent I went into while watching this.
ReplyDeleteAs for global change issues in general: Everything bad has been anthropogenic in my opinion. Crud! Running out of time. I'll email you my research!! Ahh!
After watching the documentary "The 11th Hour" I realized how quickly our resources are deteriorating and how quickly our population is rising. These two factors do not compliment eachother and will most likely continue to hurt our planet as more and more people inhabit earth. I definitely believed in the issue of global warming but was not completely aware of the detrimental effects it can have on the world.
ReplyDeleteBecause the population continues to expand every day so does the amount of human activity. These human activities result in an increased amount of burning fossil fuels, such as coal and oil. These gases damage the earth's ability to absorb carbon and further contribute to the greenhouse effect and global warming. The consequences of global warming are severely detrimental and consist of increased intensity of storms, such as Hurricane Sandy. These issues are extremely harmful to the earth and the entire population.
http://www.moorlandschool.co.uk/earth/greenhou.htm
The most profound idea that I found was really how crucial it is that we act now to fix our climate situation. Everything we do, every decision affects the climate in some way. This film changed my views on global warming in the fact that I realize the gravity of the circumstances now. I've always known we needed to do something but I didn't realize how immediate it needed to be.
ReplyDeleteI think it's been a combination of humans and the cycle of the earth that this climate change is happening and causing these crazy events. We are drastically changing the atmosphere and how it behaves thus creating large storms and hurricanes that cause massive destruction. If we don't take care of things soon, it's possible the perfect storm could brew up and create enough damage that we can't recover from.
To me, the thing that really stood out was the whole idea that all the negative problems that are occurring to our planet are due to human negligence. It would be thing if part of it was due to nature and the natural order of life, but knowing that this is all corresponding with humans' inability to coincide with nature in a harmonious way is both concerning and kind of frustrating. I already knew that climate change was caused to depletion in the Ozone layer, so this video only strengthened my opinion that humans are definitely at fault and need to resolve this issue before it becomes irreversible.
ReplyDeleteI firmly believe that the recent weather phenomenons are directly related to large amounts of green house gases and the depletion of the Ozone. The ozone is what keeps all of the sun's UV rays and radiation from reaching the earth's surface. As the Ozone begins to shrink, more of those uv rays and radiation seep into the earth's crust and oceans causing temperatures to rise. As ocean temps rise, there is a greater chance that tropical storms and hurricanes can form. And since the ocean stays warmer longer, people will start to experience more traumatic and violent storms such as Sandy. This is all due to humans' large emission of CFC's and deforestation which cuts down on trees that take in CO2 and give out oxygen.
"B.C. Air Quality." The Causes of Ozone Depletion. N.p., n.d. Web. 05 Nov. 2012. .
"Deforestation." National Geographic. N.p., n.d. Web. 05 Nov. 2012. .
The most profound idea I took away from the documentary was how our earth is on a downward decline. Climate change has been a big talk over the years. The weather patterns are changing. Huge changes don't happen overnight, but over a long period of time you can see the climate change.
ReplyDeleteAn enhanced green house effect would raise the temperatures on the surface. The more greenhouse gases tearing apart our Ozone layer, it could cause more serious storms. Hurricane Sandy is a great example. The storms are destroying a lot on the east coast.
The most profound idea i took from this documentary was, we are nature. Humans, because of our ability to form thoughts and ideas, classify our self as a species higher than all the other species. We have moved away from the truth, that we are apart of nature. The movie just re-instilled the idea in me.
ReplyDeleteMy ideas were not changed. Simply because i agree with the movie. During the entire movie i found myself shaking my head in agreement, and brain storming all the things i could do in order to contribute to minimizing my carbon foot print on Earth.
I believe everything is connected. If we cut down the trees and destroy the forest, green house gasses will add up. CO2 levels are already high, cutting down the trees will only disturb the levels even more. That isn't even the half of it. I don't specifically know how hurricane Sandy is related to deforestation or green house gasses but i would not be surprised in the slightest if there was scientific proof that could relate both things to hurricane sandy.
The most profound idea that I took away from the documentary is that Earth will soon not be capable of supporting human life due to a rapid increase in population over the years. It was really eye opening to see just how much Earth is effected by our actions. My beliefs on climate changes is that it is a natural change, however, humans are the main contribution to climate change. We have accelerated the process of climate change due to pollution, overpopulation, and deforestation.
ReplyDeleteALthough in Earth's history, there have been many climate changes, there have never been such drastic changes. These are caused mainly by overpopulation, deforestation, and an increased amount of greenhouse gases that have deteriorated the ozone. Deforestation increases the amounts of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere because there are not as many trees to reduce the amounts of carbon dioxide released. Because of this increase, greenhouse gases have been released causing the ozone layer to thin.

I was lucky to see The 11th Hour sophomore year so I have definately
ReplyDeletebeen thinking about our world and climate. I've started looking at
colleges that are more green and environmentally friendly, I've
started looking at my food choices. I really want to start positively
impacting my world.
Climate and weather scientists are cautious about saying that one
extreme weather event is irrefutably caused by climate change, but
most agree that a warmer planet will cause a higher frequency of
extreme-weather events--even if you can't scientifically prove that
one single extreme-weather event is caused by climate change. The heat
waves across the country, wildfires in Colorado and elsewhere, and the
"super derecho" storms that hit the Washington area and the rest of
the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions are thrusting this debate into
the spotlight again. It's been a reoccurring topic for the last couple
of years as more extreme weather seems to crop up each summer.
Most of us talk about the weather every day. And lately, there’s been
a lot to talk about. In the U.S. alone, we lived through
record-setting heat waves, extreme storms, and crippling drought that
set the stage for damaging forest fires.
Bad weather is nothing new. But it’s getting worse — and the
uncomfortable fact is that it’s manmade.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released
its 2011 State of the Climate Report. For good reason, this report
made a lot of news. It found that much of the recent extreme weather
we’ve seen is almost certainly tied to manmade climate change.
For instance, in La NiƱa years like 2011, extreme heat waves like the
one we saw in Texas are now 20 times more likely than before. Last
year’s warm November in the United Kingdom (the second-warmest on
record) was 62 times more likely to happen.
These kinds of extreme heat waves are happening all over the world.
And the reason is clear: Manmade pollution from greenhouse gases is
warming the atmosphere. NOAA found that in 2011, the greenhouse gas
concentration for the first time exceeded 390 parts per million.
Weather events that would otherwise be occasional, freak occurrences
are now becoming commonplace.
And let’s be clear: The scientific evidence is not in question. NOAA’s
report is simply the latest word from the scientists that manmade
pollution is increasing the risks of wild weather. These risks were
also laid out in last year’s comprehensive report from the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Lately, the weather has
been so bad that even Rupert Murdoch admitted that climate change is
real.
This is often the point when climate deniers throw up their hands and
say even if climate change is happening, there’s no way of knowing if
humans are responsible. That simply isn’t true. Scientists have
demonstrated over and over again that the steady rise in carbon
pollution has been the primary cause of the steady rise in global
temperatures since the mid-20th century. There’s no evidence that
natural causes, such as volcanoes or solar activity, have played a
significant role since then.
At this point in human history, we do more than talk about the weather
— we’re actually influencing it. We know the solution. We need to end
our dependence on dirty sources of energy like oil, coal and gas

Weather." ABC News. ABC News Network, 15 July 2012. Web. 05 Nov. 2012.

The most profound idea that I thought was very interesting in the movie was deforestation. Deforestation is something I do not get because it is so terrible for our earth. When people do it, it is mainly because farmers want to grow crops on the fertile soil. After they grow their crops the crops take up all the fertile soil that was there before, so rainforests will never grow back. It takes so long to make a natural rainforest. You will never be able to grow them back once you cut it down. I am not a tree hugger but this is ridiculous. I also learned that if we cut down all of our trees and we have to make oxygen it will cost so much money it is unreal. Trees are free though. Don’t cut them down!! My views on climate change were affected because of the film. It really helped open my eyes to the fact that be are making this earth warmer and our earth is getting worse because of us people.
ReplyDeleteGlobal warming is making hot days hotter, rainfall and flooding heavier, hurricanes stronger and droughts more severe. With more people using more energy today at a faster pace, there are bound to be problems.

ReplyDeleteGlobal warming is making hot days hotter, rainfall and flooding heavier, hurricanes stronger and droughts more severe. With more people using more energy today at a faster pace, there are bound to be problems.

The most moving part of this whole thing at least to me is that us as humans have the power to either further the process of the destruction or aid in its recovery. With the constant drilling and pollution and destruction to our planet, everything will soon look like a recreation of an end of days movie. this thought to me even has changed the way i look at the planet now its a great eye opener to believe that we were only blessed to have been able to be in the same time period of our planet to achieve and provide this everlasting glory that comes with it. So we need to stop our overproduction of useless commodities and start thinking and reflecting in how amazing nature is and stop the destruction of land to begin with.
ReplyDeleteAn enhanced green house effect would raise the temperatures on the surface of the earth resulting in shear destruction of the ozone. The more greenhouse gases tearing apart our Ozone layer, the more serious are problems become with uv radiation so not only will our planet be a desolate planet, it will also be hazardous to even populate. it could cause more serious storms then even hurricane sandy from the intense global fluxuations to the atmosphere.

The most profound thing I took away was that planet Earth could turn into venus, a hot baren desert planet. NO hope for human life. I always believed in climate change because I look around constantly at what is put into the atmosphere everyday, even if its just the amount of cars on the road.
ReplyDeleteAnthropogenic, deforestation, and enhanced greenhouse gass emission increase all factor into the extreme weather events such as hurricane Sandy because extra heat is being trapped in the atmosphere and can't be released and heat makes the weather more extreme. "The real challenge is figuring out whether a particular storm or flood was due to climate change or natural variables, said Chris Field, founding director of the Carnegie Institution's Department of Global Ecology."(Basu 1). "The extreme weather the world is seeing now is a precursor to more, he said. And it paints a picture of what global warming looks like"(Basu 1).
We are all linked and what we do effects the world and everyone of us is woven together and attached to nature with threads and when one tread is sawed at or cut that resource could vanish. Like Mrs. Binder said "There is no such thing as away".

The most profound idea I took away from the documentary was how much we have an effect on Earth. My views have changed because I see that everything we do effects the climate I knew that before but seeing and hearing people talk about how bad it is really makes me think.
ReplyDeleteThe consequences of changing the natural atmospheric greenhouse are difficult to predict but certain effects seem likely for example Earth will become warmer and a stronger greenhouse effect will warm the oceans and partially melt glaciers and other ice increasing sea level. Gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect include water vapor, CO2, carbon dioxide, Methane and CFCS.

The 11th Hour covered a lot of ground as a definitive documentary about the global changes occuring on the Earth. One of the most profound ideas I drew from it was the fact that the idea that we're killing the Earth is a slight misconception. The Earth will always be here. We, the human species, are the ones who are in grave danger. As we continue to contaminate and consume the Earth's resources, we are killing ourselves. As overpopulation multiplies, as plastic fills the oceans, as forests turn into farmland, we are endangering ourselves. It's no longer all about "Save the Planet", it's also now "Save the Human Race's future here". That's the big idea I took away from this documentary. This message was well-backed up by an abundance of statistics, interviews and saddening images and videos. This video didn't shock me or change my beliefs, it simply confirmed my pre-existing thoughts and beliefs about climate change. The changes, including global warming, going on across the globe have always been of interest and concern to me. This film gave me an impactful reminder of why it is so important to address these issues as soon as possible, on both large and individual scales.
ReplyDeleteWe know that humans are responsible for greatly increased greenhose gas emissions and deforestation. However, it is not certain whether this activity is actually the cause of climate change or an enhanced greenhouse effect. However, I believe that it is clear that there is a relationship between the two. Anthropogenic (human-caused) climate change has resulted in raising ocean levels which in turn increases the severity of the flooding in New York this week. Extreme weather, from droughts to fires to storms, have been increasing in frequences in all parts of the world. I do not think that this is a coincidence, anthropogenic warming trend is contributing to this pattern. The extent of Arctic sea ice near the North Pole hit a record low this year because of global warming, which makes superstorm formation in the North Atlantic more likely. This seems to be at least partly to blame for the destuction caused by Sandy. However, there are many other factors involved in Sandy and other severe weather patterns around the world so we cannot say for sure what the relationship is like between them and an anthropogenic enhanced greenhouse effect. Action should be taken as soon as possible to prevent global warming or else we may see events like Sandy becoming more and more frequent in the coming decades.

I found it interesting how much humans are to blame for the climate changes. I do not believe that we have enough information to be able to pin it on our species, but I believe that there is enough to create theories and estimate. I think we should work harder to conserve the "green" attitude in case we cause a meltdown. As seen in research, the climate fluxuates like it is every millinium or so. Because we are at the peak, we cannot assume that it is going to get worse or get better. I think we should take precautions now. The earth could heat up to a point at which life could not sustain itself.
ReplyDeleteThe main idea i took from this documentary was,was that we (Humans) are apart of nature just as much as trees are. But the thing that sets us apart from other animals is that we have a more developed brain, and we have a sense of looking into the future. Because of our ability to form more complex thoughts and ideas, we were able to develope tools and classify ourselves as a species that is on a higher level than other species. We have illusioned ourselves into thinking we can beat nature into submission by showing off our cool techology and our huge fossil fuel guzzling SUVs. We've moved away from the fact that we are apart of nature and just as important to trees as we are to them. The documentary just made me realize how even more how much harm we're doing to something we absolutely need to survive: Earth.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts on global warming and climate change haven't changed because i agree with what the film was trying to convey! I rememeber seeing a cartoon picture on the internet of the Earth at the doctors office with a thermometer in its mouth and the doctor telling him he has bad news, "you appear to have humans" is what the doctor told Earth. I think everything on the earth is connected, when i comes down to it everything on earth is just a different order of the same elements. Anyone who thinks that its necessary that we cut down the trees and destroy the forest isn't being realistic. The CO2 cycle that green plants part take in does more for us than we could ever ask for, with all the money in the world we couldnt buy what the rainforest does for us.
